Is It Wrong to Compare Gilmore Girls to the Love Boat?

Mon, 2009-02-23 18:41
By TimK

You have to understand, I am of Lorelai’s generation. The Love Boat was on TV while I was coming of age, and so despite the cheesy theme song, dumb jokes, sometimes half-baked story lines, the show still holds a special place in my memory.

When Luke mentioned that he and Nicole were going on a cruise, Lorelai’s reaction was completely natural: “You don’t [have any plans to get married], but after you’ve had dinner at Captain Stubing’s table and Isaac’s served you up a couple of mojitos…” For many of my generation, The Love Boat imbued the pleasure cruise with romance and inspired our affection for it. The Love Boat represents life-changing passion and heartfelt human-to-human connection.

Now that Paramount has begun releasing the episodes on DVD—they’re 1½ seasons through a 9-year original run—I’ve been devouring them as quickly as they’re being released. I’ve noticed several similarities between this television classic and my favorite show of all time: Click to continue »

Lauren Graham to Lead Untitled Comedy on ABC

Mon, 2008-12-15 02:40
By TimK

Variety reports that Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) has signed a deal with ABC to produce and star in a new comedy about a self-help guru who can’t follow her own advice when her boyfriend dumps her. (I’ve written the same sort of character myself. Its a common character type. Doctor, heal thyself!)

The new comedy as of yet has no title, but it will be written by Alex Herschlag, of Will and Grace fame, who will also serve as its executive producer.

Too bad, I never enjoyed Will and Grace. But I’ll give the new show a look-see just the same.

Just a cute, little online quiz: Which Gilmore Girls character are you?

-TimK

P.S. Here’s my result:

Your Result is: Lorelai
You are energetic, perky, and witty, but sometimes your unique sense of humor can confuse people. You are well-liked by all, but you have trouble with commitment. You care a lot for your loved ones and would do anything for them.

Grant-Lee Phillips: One of the Greatest Singers of All Time?

In response to Rolling Stone’s “100 greatest singers of all time” list (which he thinks is unfairly biased against younger artists) Gregory Phillips lists Grant-Lee Phillips (the Stars Hollow troubadour) among his 10 favorite singers.

P.S. Check out the YouTube video of Grant Lee Buffalo’s “Mockingbirds” music video, which he links to. Pop quiz: In which Gilmore Girls episode did that song appear?

Family Economics of Gilmore Girls

Thu, 2008-11-20 16:37
By TimK

Bryan Caplan, one of my favorite living economists—seriously, folks, and not just because he watched Gilmore Girls and appreciated the “quality writing.” Bryan Caplan is Associate Professor of Economics at George Mason University and the founder and curator of the online Museum of Communism. He’s also the author of the recent book The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies, which I haven’t read yet but which might just explain a lot that happened during the recent election.

Apparently, he’s working on a new book, Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids, and he’s determined to work a scene from Gilmore Girls into it. It’s the scene where Lorelai and Luke are giving a career talk at Stars Hollow High, and the kids start asking Lorelai about getting pregnant at 16, and she gets flustered, because they start challenging her statement that it was a bad choice.

Every time I watch that scene, I want to shout through the TV set at Lorelai, “Don’t hem and haw! Just tell them the truth! You have no regrets! But you gave up a lot to have Rory, and you had to work really hard, and you still didn’t make it as far as you probably would have if your life had taken a different course. Life is full of hard choices, bad choices, and good choices.”

Says Bryan in a post about this “Lorelai Paradox”:

Lorelai, like most women in her situation, has deep feelings of ambivalence about her youthful choices. But if you take the students’ arguments seriously, the scene is profoundly philosophical. Its lesson: Despite any feelings of ambivalence, Lorelai and her real-world analogues have nothing to regret - and no need to make apologies to the world.

Did I mention that Bryan Caplan is one of my favorite living economists?

LORELAI: They’re here.

RORY: Who?

LORELAI: The Joy-less Luck Club.

RICHARD: Hello girls. You look particularly lovely tonight.

RORY: Thanks Grandpa.

LORELAI: Thanks Dad. You guys look nice yourselves.

EMILY: Seems like the occasion called for it.

RICHARD: The air seems crisper here than Hartford. It’s wonderful.

LORELAI: Hey Dad, you didn’t grab the wrong prescription bottle earlier today, did you?

Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim) is among the cast performing at the East West Players’ production of The Joy Luck Club. Here’s a review.

Remember the Salt & Pepper Dip?

Wed, 2008-11-12 23:32
By TimK

I tried salt & pepper dip today with my fries. “It’s fast-food gospel.” First time, too. Just wanted to try it, on a whim. Like Sookie, I couldn’t leave it at that. I discovered two tips:

  1. Use fresh-ground pepper if you can. It’s a little more work, but you get that way-more-fresh pepper flavor.
  2. For a chili-fry dip, try throwing in a pinch of ground cumin and a dash (or two) of ground red cayenne pepper. (But keep a glass of milk handy!)

What are your thoughts on salt & pepper dip?

What Gilmore Girls Teaches Us About New Year's Resolutions

By TimK

New Year’s is about change. It’s about looking back on the past year and making a better life in the new one. Gilmore Girls tells us much about entering the new year, but you have to read between the lines. Here are just some of the things Gilmore Girls teaches us about New Year’s resolutions: Click to continue »

  • If you talk fast enough, you don’t need any!
  • “Become more cynical and self absorbed” is a good one.
  • Change sucks.

Yoga for Kirk, and Rory Should've Told the Truth

Today was one of those days I felt like watching some Gilmore Girls. Yeah, I’ve been watching all kinds of stuff that’s not GG. You know what they say: Absence makes the heart grow fonder. And today was one of those fond exceptions.

I’ve been going through my Netflix queue, unfortunately filling it up again as soon as I empty it. It’s a “live-lock” problem. Or as Lorelai might put it: Did you know that if the entire population of China walked by, the line would never end because of the rate of population increase? That’s my Netflix queue. Click to continue »
