Dean asked softly if he belonged there. Rory didn’t answer. They both knew he didn’t, ever. Sighing, he got back into his truck; a new one that he’d bought with his honest, hard-earned money, and drove past the mansion’s gate.

Rory’s heart sunk in her chest, thudding dully there. Of all the people in the world to hurt, she’d done it to Dean twice: once as a boy, once as a man. But there she was with her tiara and designer dress with Logan begging her to come back inside. She had to wonder if it was really so inevitable.

Is this thing on? *taps mic*

“Dean. You were right. I’m sorry, you were right and I was wrong. I was wrong to think that I was different. I’m no different. You and me, same thing. Just like you said. She almost sold the Inn. The Inn that she and Sookie worked so hard for! She was THIS close to selling it to some corporation and becoming their liaison person, or whatever it’s called, with offices all over and travel and she didn’t even think about the kids or the house or anything!"

“Luke, what -”

“It’s not just that. We were supposed to get married, we were making plans, cautiously. I was working out some personal business. But she didn’t care about that. She got impatient, and then she just up and demanded that I marry her on the spot and when I didn’t, she took the shortest route to something better. She slept with Christopher.”

“God, Luke, I’m so sorry.”

“Don’t be. It’s made me realize something. Something I should have realized a long time ago.” Luke leaned forward, pulled Dean’s head down, and kissed him, full on the mouth. “Still sorry?”

Dean stepped closer, tilted Luke’s chin up, and returned the kiss. “No.”

The winter carnival raged around them, but they didn’t hear people hocking their games or food or drink. They didn’t see the bright lights around them or the kids giggling as they pushed past the pair. All they saw was each other and the fact that they had just survived another speed bump on their road to happiness. Lorelai melted into Luke’s arms as she began to plan out April’s initiation to the Gilmore Movie Night while Luke held onto his lover tightly, trying to figure out how he was going to prepare his new found daughter for the Gilmore’s.

By then, it was far too late to take it back, and besides, she was used to his socks in the bathroom.

Alternate ending for Luke/Lorelai, set first season during "Rory's Birthday Parties". (First two lines of dialog from that episode)

Lorelai smiled at Luke, serene with a day's worth of shopping. "Okay, burger boy, dance!"

"Will you marry me?"

Lorelai froze, half-way down to the stool.

Luke asked -- huh?

'What'. Say 'what' and leave! Lorelai's mind screamed at her. Just say 'what'--

"Sure."

I -- What?

Lorelai wasn't sure who was more stunned, her or Luke. She waited for him to take it back, to say that he was joking.

It wasn't until four years and one child later that Lorelai realized that he may have been waiting for her to be the one to take it back.
