Paper Moon

Fri, 2008-05-09 17:15

It was time for me to really concentrate on the movie list & watch Paper Moon. I know this movie won several awards, so it wasn’t a part of the bad Gilmore movie nights. I avoided this movie from the 70’s because it was from the 70’s. I hate the faded colors of the 70’s movies. Plus, I can never tell if the men are supposed to be good looking or not, so it’s hard to tell who might be a love interest.

I started the movie & was pleasantly surprised to not have the faded color, but I just couldn’t watch it because it was from the 70’s & for all I knew they were going to fade into that horrible color at any moment. I think I maybe have just created a new phobia, I hope they don’t name it after me.

Paris

Fri, 2008-05-02 17:07

If I’m going to be a Gilmore Girl, I have to have a Paris to be my foil, challenge me, make me look sweet by comparison. Look, you have to like me people, I’m not nearly as annoying as that girl. Unfortunately, all of my friends are nice.

So I went on a quest to find my very own Paris. I spent some time in the reference section of the bookstore because that’s where it seems like Paris would hang out, but I was in a chain bookstore & I didn’t know if she’d be there. I checked to see if anyone was yelling at the customer service people or saying “This is my natural speaking voice.” I live in a small town so I’m always on the lookout for hungry reporters trying to find the seedy underbelly. “Stars Hollow doesn’t have a seedy underbelly.”

I’m thinking that maybe I’ll just set up some kind of complicated chart system & see who stops to look at it. I really have to find a Paris, otherwise it means that I AM the Paris of my own world, & I just can’t have that.

It’s finally happened

Sat, 2008-04-26 01:21

There’s something that I disagree with the Gilmores about. Shocking, I know. I had hoped that I would never see this day. Usually, I come around to their way of thinking, but not this time.

It happened during the B&B episode. The Gilmores had finally braved the B&B lobby because of their weakness for scones. There is a huge cultural difference here. I live in Utah & once had a conversation like this with from someone back east “No, a scone is fry bread. Ummm fry bread? It’s like umm a scone”. So the confused party looked up scone online & brought me a picture of something that looked like a muffin. A scone is not a muffin.

Anyways, on the show they were eating the muffin scone impostors that look like this:

Actually a scone is bread that is fried. It is yummy. It looks like this:

This pretty much ensures that I will never move east. All because of the scones. What do scones look like in your area?

WPM

Fri, 2008-04-18 15:33

I’ve been unsuccessful at finding a show to replace Gilmore Girls. I can’t even find a show to take away the stinging pain & deep sense of loss. However, if we’re talking pure wpm (words per minute as Paris calls it), I may have found a match. After I watch a few hours of the Gilmore Girls, I notice that I start talking really fast. It’s fun to watch people try & keep up with my conversation. If my stories are boring even me, I try speeding them up & slowing them down in mid sentence to see if anyone catches on. This is especially fun when discussing business.

They talk as least as fast as the Gilmores on The West Wing. Granted, the West Wing lacks humor, cute clothes, & Kirk. However, I just close my eyes & enjoy the wpm.

Bed & Breakfast

Sat, 2008-04-12 00:58

I was recently booking a hotel & thought “Hmm what about a bed & breakfast?” Yes, I know that Rory & Lorelai hate B&B’s. I always found this odd because the Dragonfly is kind of a B&B that also serves lunch & dinner. I guess the difference is the Dragonfly is cooler.

There was this really cool B&B that I came across in my search where the rooms were based on different authors. It seemed perfect. I’ve never stayed in a Bed & Breakfast before just because I’m a little bit scared of them, especially since seeing the Gilmore Girls experience. It just like I’m staying in a stranger’s house & that stranger may have imported floral wallpaper from France. The scones would be nice though. In the end, I just couldn’t risk it & decided to stay in a hotel, although I might’ve gotten an interesting blog post if the B&B was like the Chesire Cat.

Gilmore Road Trip

Sat, 2008-04-05 00:48

As far as I can remember the Gilmores have taken three road trips:

  • The first trip was to the Chesire Cat Inn & road trip to Harvard.
  • One to Martha’s Vineyard with Logan & Luke.
  • A long drive with Emily to the fake Mia’s wedding.

Let’s face it, most of the time on other TV shows when the cast takes a road trip or is outside of their element, it sucks. Not true in this case. (Well fine, the Martha’s Vineyard episode left a lot to be desired, but Amy didn’t write it, Daniel did.)

I really love the Gilmore road trips. I love watching the Gilmore’s watch a roomba vacuum the floor. It’s just that kind of show, it can work in all kind of situations. I’m going on a road trip & was trying to think how to make it more Gilmore. The only thing that I can think of is that I need to have my window rolling up privileges revoked. At least I don’t know how to fold a map correctly. I’m more of the Lorelai approach. I just crumple it up & say “Is it smaller? OK, then”.

Everything I didn’t know about Sam Phillips

Fri, 2008-03-28 15:48
  • First off, Sam Phillips is a girl. I should’ve guessed this because she is credited with the la la music on Gilmore Girls.
  • According to wikipedia she was promoted in the 80’s as “the Christian Cyndi Lauper.”
  • Went from using the name Leslie Phillips to the name Sam Phillips when she changed record labels in 1988. That’s quite the leap.
  • New album expected out this year call “Will you trade me this for a tank of gas?” Haven’t we all asked that question at some point & time?

I really am becoming a Gilmore

Fri, 2008-03-21 15:41

Remember when Lorelai & Rory finally reunited after months of fighting? All through the separation Lorelai kept conversation topics written on post it notes to tell Rory about when they reconciled. Then, Lorelai couldn’t read the notes. I think one of them said Russian Plebeshem. I was pleasantly surprised to look down at a post it note on my desk & see this:

I have no idea what that says. It was obviously important enough for me to commemorate it on a post it. In other news, I’m not like Rory because I use pink post it notes & Rory uses serious office supplies.

The Return of Jezebel James

Fri, 2008-03-14 04:07

The Return of Jezebel James airs tonight. It’s a sitcom by Amy Sherman Palladino. This leads me to wonder, what exactly was Gilmore Girls? It’s wasn’t a comedy or a drama, or even a drama-edy. It was just awesome.

I didn’t watch the preview for Jezebel James because I couldn’t find the mute button, or really the unmute button. I’ll definitely be tuning in. Once again, not having a life pays off.  If you’re reading this after the show aired, what did you think about it?

Learning to love snow

Fri, 2008-03-07 16:39

I’ve never shared Lorelai’s belief that snow is magical. Probably because I live in Utah so I know that snow is in fact very cold. In snowy weather, a sweater & scarf almost never keeps you warm. Ah, to live in a world of magical TV snow.

Instead my feelings about snow coincide with the episode where Lorelai hates snow, except no one has built me an ice skating rink yet. I’m still waiting on that one. I will however concede that snow is magical. Snow hides a lot of flaws, or in the case of my town, piles of junk sitting in the front yard. So I like snow, just as long as I don’t have to go outside.

For Keeps

Fri, 2008-02-29 21:57

I probably wouldn’t have even watched the movie “For Keeps?” if it hadn’t been for Gilmore Girls. As a rule, I tend to stay away from any Molly Ringwald movie that isn’t “Pretty in Pink” because I’m always horribly disappointed. I really loved For Keeps because if Lorelai was a real person, she might’ve watched this when she was pregnant. Yes, I’m still in touch with reality enough to know that Lorelai doesn’t exist, I only wish she did. Plus, it was interesting to see how things were different in the long ago era of the 80’s.

Saint Elmo’s Fire

Fri, 2008-02-22 21:56

I’m a horrible child of the 80’s. I hadn’t seen St. Elmo’s Fire until a week ago. It was probably my favorite brat pack’movie of all time. That isn’t saying a lot. I enjoyed the Gilmore Girls’ references to this show a lot more than the actual movie. Ok, so maybe The Breakfast Club is my favorite brat pack movie. What’s your favorite brat pack movie?

Rory’s Book Club: Unless by Carol Shields

Fri, 2008-02-15 21:52

I usually am not a fan of books about writers. Especially when the book is about a writer who is writing a book about a writer, who is probably writing a book about a writer. It’s just too confusing. The only time this is acceptable is on the Stephen Colbert Show when he stands in front of a portrait of himself & in the portrait there’s a picture of him standing in front of his portrait, so on & so forth. However, there was one chapter in this book that made the entire thing worthwhile, & I’m not telling you which one.

How to keep Luke

Fri, 2008-02-08 22:59

I always think that I want to date a Luke Danes. He’s so stable. However, when I really think about it, he’s also grumpy, moody, & slow to commit. Now, Lorelai is my hero, so I don’t think that she was at fault for their problems. I spend way too much time thinking about these kind of things, so here is what she might’ve done differently.

Luke needs time to process. Most of Luke & Lorelai’s problems arose because Lorelai needed an answer right then, & Luke needed time to think about it, such as when April showed up.

Luke also needs space. Although he did attend more town meetings & events when they got together, he still needed Luke time. He’s never going to be the center of attention party planner.

Honesty. It seems like whenever Christopher called, Lorelai wouldn’t mention it & it would turn into a big fight because Luke would assume that she wouldn’t hide it if it meant nothing.

So I guess I still want to date a Luke Danes, but maybe one with less issues that will still build me an ice skating rink.

Every town needs a Troubadour

Fri, 2008-02-01 22:54

I can only go so far in my quest to become a Gilmore Girl. I wish my town had a troubadour to sing songs as I walk across the city square, but we don’t. The logical solution is to become the town troubadour.

I own a guitar. It’s blue. I know three chords. I can totally pull off the mysterious thing. I can’t sing. At all. I also like to write in short sentences. For awhile I toyed around with idea of being a bad town troubadour, like in the Season 6 finale. That I could totally do. I just don’t want to end up the subject of a town meeting, so this is one experiment I’ll have to pass on.

Simply the best

Fri, 2008-01-25 22:45

I’m still having Gilmore Girls withdrawals, so I’ve been trying to find a replacement show. It’s like when a goldfish dies & after a few days/weeks/months, you are ready to go to the pet store. I’ll always be loyal to the Gilmores, but I just wanted something to fill the gapping void in my life since the show ended. I decided to try some shows that have already finished their run. This way I know they are going to end, & when they are going to end, so I won’t be too traumatized. So far I’ve tried:

  • Wonderfalls. Only four episodes aired, but the DVDs have 13 episodes. It’s a funny show that pretty much sums up generation y, but I couldn’t get too attached with just 13 shows.
  • Alias. So many people have recommended this show to me, because Sidney kicks people & I love that. However, I just got so bored & only made it through half of the first season.
  • Whenever I tell people that I love Gilmore Girls, they seem to recommend Felicity. Great, four whole seasons. Again, this show just didn’t seem to move. Like Alias I just couldn’t get involved. If I hadn’t watched Gilmore Girls, I might’ve liked it, but Amy Sherman Palladino spoiled me with interesting characters & conversations.

If I keep this up, pretty soon I’ll be watching One Tree Hill. There doesn’t seem to be anything else out there that is of the Gilmore caliber.

The Fancy Pony Tail

Fri, 2008-01-18 22:42

At first, I loved the sleek ponytail that Lorelai always wears with her fancy party dresses, it’s so easy to emulate. Then I started wondering, why do they even bother? Apparently it takes about three weeks to make Lauren Graham’s hair straight,. Which means this sleek pony tail probably takes longer than any other updo or more elegant hairstyle. Besides, my hair is in this style everyday, I want something different when I dress up. It doesn’t even work with a tiara. The great thing about a pony tail is that it’s easy & the fancy pony tail just ruins that.
