RORY: You are going to be the Renoir girl. End of story.

LORELAI: How?

RORY: Well, if they want an Anthea for “Portrait of a Young Girl Named Anthea,” then they’re going to have to have you for the Renoir girl.

LORELAI: Well, look at you folding your laundry all haughty and powerful.

RORY: Bada-bing all over his nice ivy-league suit.

It’s a long story, and it starts with Lorelai. The last time the Festival of Living Pictures came to town, seven years ago, Lorelai played the girl from Renoir’s painting “Dance at Bougival.” But she flinched. Big time. So this year, Taylor gave the part to Carol Dandridge. Ouch.

On the other hand, Rory has the perfect face for a new piece, Girolamo Parmigianino’s “Portrait of a Young Girl Named Anthea.”

So one day while folding laundry, Rory reveals to Lorelai her plan to help out her mother:

RORY: Well, if they want an Anthea for “Portrait of a Young Girl Named Anthea,” then they’re going to have to have you for the Renoir girl.

LORELAI: Well, look at you folding your laundry all haughty and powerful.

RORY: Bada-bing all over his nice ivy-league suit.

This last line is an allusion to a scene in The Godfather: Part I, an allusion to power. To the amusement of his peers, Michael Corleone proposes gunning down a certain corrupt police captain and the drug lord he’s protecting. This leads to a pivotal scene in the movie, which is also mentioned in another episode of Gilmore Girls.

His brother Sonny explains how it is. It’s not like the Army, where you can shoot them from a mile away. “You’ve gotta get up close like this and bada-bing! You blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit.”
