Episode 110

After the fall-out of Rory staying out all night with Dean, things are still chilly between Lorelai, Rory, and Emily. Lane gives Rory advice about the art of gift-giving. Emily and Lorelai have a tiff when Lorelai explains that she will be late to the annual Gilmore Christmas party because she has to work. Emily coldly uninvites her, stating that if Lorelai is going to be late, she might as well not come, and Lorelai is strangely disappointed by this. Dean shows up at Rory’s window after Rory has left for the party, and is caught by Lorelai. After a heart-to-heart, Lorelai and Dean patch things up. Luke, seeing that Lorelai is lonely and upset because she couldn’t attend the party, makes her a ’Santa burger’ to cheer her up. While at the diner, Lorelai receives a vague voicemail from Rory, telling her that Richard is in the hospital. Luke offers to give her a ride. Each of the Gilmore girls reacts to Richard’s medical emergency differently. Emily is confronted with the fact that her husband may one day die, and demands that she be given the decency to die before him. Lorelai, unsure of how she should be reacting, thinks back to her strained relationship with her father and feels like a disappointment as a daughter. Rory is afraid of her grandfather dying before she is given the chance to know him. Emily, in an attempt to distract herself from Richard’s condition, tries to find out the status of the Lorelai/Luke relationship from Luke. After finding out that Richard’s condition was only a bout of angina, the Gilmores settle their differences. Lorelai gives Luke the blue baseball cap that he wears for years to come as a thank-you for his support.
