True feelings to Lorelai Gilmore

Hi,
must say I completely agree with everything TimK wrote about women’s beauty. Me and my girlfriend (wife soon) we love watching GG, and I do not show how much the beauty of the main characters strikes me, though I’m sure she knows. And the thing about what’s exciting about a woman - completely agree!!!

Great site and great article too! Thanks a lot

Lorelai's sense of style; and that's not Mia!

Lorelai’s Versus Lauren’s Sense of Style

I’ve wondered how closely Lorelai’s sense of style matches with Lauren’s. I remember an interview with Amy Sherman-Palladino—I don’t remember where the interview was. She mentioned trying to find outfits that Lorelai would wear that Lauren would also wear. The implication was that Lauren does affect Lorelai’s personality. Hold on a sec… (sound of web pages flipping)…

Here it is, from TV Guide, quoted in Ask Ausiello:

Question: Just saw your story about Lorelai’s wedding dress in the new TV Guide and, to me, it looks ugly on her. Why did AS-P and Lauren choose it? — Stephanie

Ausiello: Well, I urge Gilmore Girls addicts everywhere to go pick up a copy of the new TV Guide magazine (on sale Thursday with NCIS on the cover) and judge for yourselves. I, personally, thought the dress was a little plain-Jane, but as AS-P pointed out, her mission was twofold: To find a dress that Lorelai would like and Lauren would wear. No easy task. “I wanted Lauren to feel pretty in it, [but at the same time] the dress Lorelai would wear and the dress Lauren would wear would be two completely different dresses. Lauren would probably wear something a little sleeker. Lorelai would wear something probably a little funkier.”

That’s Not Mia!

Oh, that’s a whole other subject, and don’t get me started! The character in last week’s episode was a completely different person than the person we saw in “The Ins and Outs of Inns.” Back in season 2, the Mia we met was quietly admirable, someone I very quickly made a hero and looked up to. The way she handled Emily, for example, with an Zen-like calmness, not trying to change Emily, acting out of pure kindness even in the face of hatred, without even a pinch of bitterness. I was truly left in awe.

And I was looking forward to seeing that character again. Throughout last week’s episode I kept searching for something, any little clue, that this is the same person. Yes, people change. Over years, a person changes in appearance and in behavior. But she’s still the same person underneath.

Last summer, I saw an old friend for the first time since he had moved across the country 5 years ago. It took me a few beats even to recognize him as the same guy! But once we got talking, it all came back. Of course it was the same guy! Yes, he had put on some weight. As I had. Yes, he had a beard. That was new. He even had new interests and attitudes. People change. But underneath, he was still the same friend I had learned to love all those years ago.

I couldn’t find that in the new Mia.

-TimK

Today I Admit to My True Feelings for Lorelai Gilmore

I absolutley LOVE everything that Lorelai wears….I’m sure that Lauren’s sense of style has been brought out and incorporated into Lorelai. She wears just the most fabulous clothes and she is very beautiful. I thought the episode was just ok. I am not the only one, I found out, that hated the whole reason for the storyline. That was NOT Mia!!! That’s like subbing Bootsie out!! You can’t do that cuz we all know what Bootsie looks like along with his quirks and personality. Sorry, got off the subject….and on that note, I am done griping and p.s. I am in love with Luke Danes AND Scott Patterson (and I am married, I love my husband very very much, but there is something about Luke Danes and that backwards baseball cap that puts me over the moon). I would gladly be Luke’s Lorelai any day of the week….

Today I Admit to My True Feelings for Lorelai Gilmore

Today, I’m going to admit to my true feelings for Lorelai Gilmore. This is something I don’t usually talk about, because I don’t want my wife to make a decision regarding whether I’m allowed to watch Gilmore Girls.

Before I go on, let me state emphatically for the record: The reason I love GG—and always have—is because of the storytelling. I’ve always been a fan of powerful stories. Because the best thing about a story is it makes you forget that it’s not real. It lets you escape from the real world and into the imaginary. And it lets you feel things that you may have forgotten. And sometimes things you otherwise would not be allowed to feel.

And before I go on, let me note that the reason I watched my first episode of GG was because Edward Herrmann starred in it. And I’m a fan of Edward Herrmann. But that’s another blog post. Let me note—for the record—I did not begin watching GG to see Lauren Graham.

That said, I’ve been keeping something relatively quiet. Something about Lorelai Gilmore, or more accurately about Lauren Graham. But to understand this thing, you have to understand a little about me.

It all started when I was 12 years old, my first crush. She sat in the seat in front of me in a bunch of my classes. And when she walked by, a wonderful scent wafted from her hair. Her hair is what I remember most about her, because it’s what I spent most of the school day looking at. It was dark and very long, and on the side a barrette held it up to reveal a smooth, olive-skinned cheek.

I know that beauty is a very subjective thing. But the first thing you have to understand about me is that I am very particular to brunettes. And I’m very particular to long hair. But there’s more.

Through the years when I was young and idiotic, I fell in love numerous times, always with the wrong women. Looking back, it’s freakish, actually, and a little scary. That’s a different story. Beauty may be a very subjective thing, but I can still describe to you the most beautiful girl in the world. Or rather, what she would look like if she existed. She has long, dark hair; blue eyes; soft, pale skin; barely noticeable freckles; and hard-edged, gracefully arched eyebrows.

Many people don’t think eyebrows are a major feature of a woman’s beauty. But they are one of the first things I noticed about Lauren Graham. Yes, Lauren Graham has sexy eyebrows. And all the other characteristics on my list. Lauren Graham is perhaps the most beautiful actress on TV, even though beauty is very subjective.

The thing is, Lorelai tends to wear dresses that make me want to upchuck. She goes for spaghetti straps that turn her so top-heavy, it looks like if you gave her a gentle push, she’d topple over. Or she wears an empire waist that makes her look pregnant. Or at least like she’s trying to hide something under there. Or she wears a skirt so short, you think she’s trying to look like a teenager. Or a neckline so deep you fear her boobs are going to jiggle out. Ugh. Shudder. Not pretty or even sexy, by the way.

(Other guys may disagree with me, but only when they’re in pig mode. If you can get at the truth of what a guy really finds desirable and exciting, beautiful, I’ll lay you odds that floozy cleavage is not part of it. Too easy. There has to be mystery. Gentle subtlety. The spark is in what you don’t see, and sometimes in what you can’t even quantify.)

And then occasionally, when no one’s looking, Lorelai will wear something like what she wore to Mia’s wedding. Simple and understated. But it brings out the goddess in her.

A simple, structured, A-line silhouette. I love it when she stops trying to make her boobs look big, and just lets herself look proportioned.

A knee-length hem. When you’re forty, dress like a 40-year-old, not like you’re trying to look 20 again.

A deep V-neck, but nothing that Emily wouldn’t wear. Lauren Graham can pull off a V like that without appearing too salacious. It lengthens her neck, and draws attention to the freckles that run down, all without revealing hardly anything at all. That’s sexy.

Short sleeves. Long sleeves are okay, too. I didn’t mention it before, but arms are another sensual part of a woman’s body. Short sleeves are an easy way she can show off her soft, tender skin, all without revealing too much.

Colors that complement, not conflict. Lorelai has always been color-coordinated. Sometimes she wears brighter colors that play off the richness of her blue eyes. Sometimes, darker colors that accentuate her face. But I don’t ever remember her wearing anything that interferes with the stark contrast between her hair and skin. You almost want to reach out and caress her cheek, or run your fingers through her hair. Excellently done.

The sash around her neck. This flourish must have been a Lorelai-moment of pure genius. “What am I supposed to do with this? Unh. I know. I’ll wear it around my neck, like this. How cool is that?”

I originally was going to entitle this post, “That Sexy Dress Lorelai Wore at Mia’s Wedding: A Guy’s Perspective.” It’s more descriptive, but maybe less interesting than what I eventually came up with.

I guess I’m trying to say that I really enjoyed last week’s episode of Gilmore Girls. Because I got to see Emily and Lorelai and Rory trapped in a car together for umpteen hours. And because there was another good Tuesdays with Morrie reference. And because I got to see Lorelai in that dress.

-TimK

P.S. What do you think? Does Lorelai look better in the simpler, more traditional outfits that she wears? Or does she look better when she pushes propriety to the limit?

Update: Here’s the dress Lorelai wore in the episode “Wedding Bell Blues.” When I ask, fans—usually women—tell me this dress is much sexier than the more conservative one I was talking about above. But let me tell you why I hate this dress.

Let’s start at the top. It has spaghetti straps and a wide V. This doesn’t just lengthen Lorelai’s neck. It widens her shoulders. Now, for part of the episode she wore a little jacket over the dress. (Ugh. What do you call those things?) This mitigated the enlargening effect.

At the hem, this dress has a mermaid silhouette. Its close fit makes her look smaller on the bottom.

Now, Lauren Graham is tall, as tall as I am. By itself, this is a très sexy. But wearing a dress that makes her look big on top and tiny on the bottom? Coupled with high heels? It’s like watching a high-wire act. Don’t sneeze at her; you might accidentally blow her over.

What do you think? I honestly, truly find the black dress more exciting than the silver one. Does that make me strange? Or am I onto something?
