Mark O’Meara has a theory about Gilmore Girls:

For a long time I regarded it as a failing of Gilmore Girls that all of the secondary relationships and characters in the show seem simplistic. Now I am more of the opinion that the whole point of all those people with all their relationships is to be the poor cousin of Rory and Lorelai and their relationship. Their relationship is not just the centrepiece; it is the whole reason, and everything else is really just there to highlight how special this idealised mother-daughter relationship is.

I think.

Well, I don’t think the secondary characters are simplistic. The minor characters are. But the secondary characters are quite complex: Richard and Emily, Luke, Lane, and Paris.

But Lorelai and Rory are indeed the reason for the show. They are the characters that make the story go. So the relationship can’t be idealized. If it were, there would be no story. That’s why from the very first episode, Rory hides her feelings for Dean from her mom. That’s where the drama comes from, the problems they have.
