In the episode “Kiss and Tell,” in reference to The Crucible.

LUKE: Coffee? (no answer) Aw, come on. Are you mad at me too? I mean, a man can’t choose whether or not he wants a picture of a fat, stupid bird on his wall? My God, that’s the reason the damn Pilgrims came here in the first place.

LORELAI: Luke, I wasn’t snubbing you. I didn’t hear you, and now I’m concerned about you.

LUKE: Sorry, just feeling a little persecuted lately. Coffee?

LORELAI: Please.

LUKE: You okay?

LORELAI: Yes, I’m fine.

LUKE: You don’t look fine.

LORELAI: Well thank you.

LUKE: I just meant you look concerned.

LORELAI: I’m preoccupied.

LUKE: You look concerned.

LORELAI: Well I’m not…

LUKE: I’m not gonna say you look concerned.

LORELAI: I’m not gonna talk about how good you’d look dressed like one of the guys from The Crucible.

LUKE: Fair enough.

Lorelai says this to Luke as part of a gag running through the episode. It starts in the first scene, when Taylor wants Luke to decorate his diner for Autumn. Luke refuses. Other citizens of Stars Hollow also want Luke to pretty up the place. But not Lorelai. Lorelai is preoccupied, because Rory hasn’t told her about her first kiss. And she doesn’t want to talk about it. So she uses wit to get Luke to leave her alone.

The Crucible is a play, later made into a movie, set in the midst of the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Lorelai is upping the stakes. If Luke doesn’t leave her alone, she can do better than to suggest that he put up some decorations. She can suggest that he get into full costume.
