New Year’s is about change. It’s about looking back on the past year and making a better life in the new one. Gilmore Girls tells us much about entering the new year, but you have to read between the lines. Here are just some of the things Gilmore Girls teaches us about New Year’s resolutions:

If you talk fast enough, you don’t need any!
“Become more cynical and self absorbed” is a good one.
Change sucks.

“Say hay boke-mahn he pah du say oh.”
You can always change the word “year” to the word “baby” and have a baby shower instead.
Putting yourself “out there” may not be as good an idea as you think it is.
Buck up! There’s a whole world out there full of men for you to reject.
Resolve to get more drunk before Friday night dinner.
Never resolve to drink less coffee!
Never resolve to eat less junk food!
Having your place of business burn down can be a wonderful opportunity. Bring out the bubbly!
No matter how desperately you try to control your life, there will always be a crazy relative or neighbor nearby.
Christopher will never change.
If you invent just one new Gilmore-ism each day, you’ll already be ahead of the season-7 writers.
Don’t renovate the house until after the wedding.
Like most of us, Emily and Richard don’t do resolutions until someone almost dies.
If you want to fall in love, fall in love with your vegetable guy.
Stop siding with the meddlesome grandparents, and go back home already!
Don’t date a band-mate. Marry him instead.
No matter how many books you read, you will still be ignorant and unable to think of a synonym for “ignorant.”
No matter how hard you try, you will always end up being just like your mother.
