Episode 101

Introducing Lorelai Gilmore, her daughter Rory, and the rest of Stars Hollow…

Lorelai and Sookie talk about their dream, to run their own inn.

Rory is accepted into the Chilton School, but Lorelai can’t come up with the enrollment fee. As a last resort, secretly, she asks her estranged parents, Richard and Emily, to loan her the money. They do, but Emily wants to be more involved in the lives of the younger Gilmores. So she has one condition: Lorelai and Rory must come to dinner every Friday night.

Rory meanwhile meets the new boy, Dean, at Stars Hollow High and mysteriously no longer thinks it’s a good idea to go to Chilton.

Episode 102

On Rory’s first day at Chilton, Lorelai oversleeps and doesn’t have time to pick up her laundry at the cleaners. So Rory gets to meet her new headmaster with her mother wearing a pink patterned T-shirt, cut-off jeans, and cowboy boots. Lorelai is terrified to discover Emily there waiting for them. And so begins the Lorelai’s first day at Chilton.

Rory quickly learns that education at Chilton is not just about learning. The learning is there; it’s overwhelming. On top of that, Chilton has its own cliques and torments. Paris and Tristan independently set out to make Rory’s Chilton career as horrible as they can.

Lorelai gets asked out by Ian, a father of one of Rory’s new schoolmates. But she declines, because she doesn’t want to date a Chilton dad.

Episode 103

Rory needs to take a physical education elective. So Emily finagles Richard into taking Rory to the country club to learn to golf.

Meanwhile, Lorelai prepares for a wedding between a pair of spoiled rich twin sisters and their fiances, who freakily happen to be twin brothers.

Neither Rory nor Richard is looking forward to the golf outing. But it gives them a chance to chat, without Emily and Lorelai. They end up enjoying themselves.

Rory carries this new relationship with her grandfather into her daily life, which makes Lorelai jealous. She acts out, picking a fight with Rory, even arguing over whose breasts are bigger.

Episode 104

Rory gets a D on a paper at school, but is too humiliated to tell her mother. But Lorelai meets Rory’s professor, Max Medina, at a parent-teacher meeting, at which she finds out about the D. They stay up all night studying for a big test on Shakespeare. But they oversleep, and Rory, running late, takes the jeep. She gets sidetracked, however, when she collides with a deer. This makes her late for the test, and she is forbidden from taking it, resulting in a nasty argument between Lorelai and Headmaster Charleston, with Mr. Medina and Rory stuck in the middle.

Meanwhile, a restaurant critic reviews Sookie’s food favorably. Except for the magic risotto, which was “perfectly fine.” After extensive research, she discovers that he had eaten it with the wrong wine. So she hunts down the critic and visits him at his house to deliver another plate of the magic risotto, this time with the correct wine.

Episode 105

At the Chilton bake sale, Lorelai encounters Max Medina. She’s still upset because he refused to let Rory take her test on Shakespeare in “The Deer-Hunters”. But with wit and persistence, he convinces her to make a tentative peace and meet him for coffee. At the coffee shop, he persuades her to let him take her out on a date.

Meanwhile, Babette and Morey’s cat Cinnamon passes away. In true Star’s Hollow style, the whole town attends a wake for the beloved pet, a wake that Lorelai and Rory organized. Amongst all the drama of Cinnamon’s wake, Lorelai forgets two very important things:

She needed to talk to Rory about dating her teacher before the night of the big date.
She scheduled the wake for that same night.

So when Max shows up to take Lorelai out, and Rory sees him, Lorelai has explaining to do on two fronts.

Episode 106

Emily serves pudding at Friday night dinner, a food she normally would not be caught dead within fifteen feet of. What’s stranger, she served it because she knew Lorelai and Rory like pudding. Lorelai is overwhelmed that her mother actually noted that she liked something and acted on that information. So when Emily asks Lorelai to help her shop for a present for Rory’s sixteenth birthday, Lorelai agrees.

Meanwhile, Emily insists that the girls come to Friday night dinner on Rory’s birthday. This forces them to reschedule Rory’s Star’s Hollow birthday bash for the following night. The full impact of this dawns on Rory only after she accidentally discovers that all of the kids at school have invitations to the birthday party Emily is throwing on Friday night. These are kids who look down on her and whom she hates to be around. But she doesn’t want to tell her mother, because of the good relationship Lorelai is finally starting to enjoy with her mother. All because of the pudding.

All hell breaks loose Friday night, amongst myriad guests, when Rory finally snaps and Lorelai learns that Emily never asked if it was alright to invite these kids.

Episode 107

The autumn festival is in town. Luke has not decorated the diner, though Taylor and others want him to. They badger him about it, he rants at them. Life is good. But a far more paramount conflict is brewing.

Rory goes into Doose’s on the pretense of looking for corn starch. But really she just wants to see Dean. Funny, he wants to see her, too. He offers her some free soda, hides it behind his back, and asks her to pick one. When she reaches for one, he leans over and kisses her on the lips, in one of the most famous scenes of the show.

Problem is, Rory doesn’t feel she can tell Lorelai, because she doesn’t think Lorelai would like it. But Mrs. Kim overhears Rory telling Lane about it, and she confronts Lorelai, who is at first confused, and then upset about it. Lorelai manufactures opportunities for Rory to tell her about the kiss, but Rory just isn’t. She gets more and more upset, until finally, she just comes right out with, “So, kissed any good boys lately?”

Now, desperate to prove that she’s cool with Rory liking a boy, she invites Dean to movie night with the girls. Which just makes the situation worse, because Rory and Dean haven’t been out on a date yet, and Rory doesn’t want to spend their first date with her mother, and she can’t uninvite him, and she doesn’t want it to look like she needed her mother to get her a date. So Dean comes over for movie night… Under the watchful eyes of Stars Hollow. (Kissing in the market in Stars Hollow. What were they thinking? That they wanted privacy?)

Episode 109

Chilton is holding a formal dance—Rory’s first, if she decides to go. Which she does, of course, once Dean agrees to go with her. Lorelai makes her a lovely dress, Emily comes over to bombard Rory with photos and hassle her date, and the happy couple drives off to the dance where excitement awaits.

After almost getting a date with Tristan, Paris instead shows up with her cousin who hits on Rory. Tristan picks a fight with Dean (who is nice enough to refuse to wipe the floor with him), and the happy couple takes off for Stars Hollow and a little coffee.

Unfortunately, they make a pit stop at Miss Patty’s empty dance studio and read a little Dorothy Parker, which surprisingly puts them to sleep despite the caffeine. Miss Patty’s Yoga class wakes them up in the morning, sending Rory running home to her mother and grandmother fighting over how she’s going to turn out just like Lorelai after spending the night with a boy.

Episode 110

After the fall-out of Rory staying out all night with Dean, things are still chilly between Lorelai, Rory, and Emily. Lane gives Rory advice about the art of gift-giving. Emily and Lorelai have a tiff when Lorelai explains that she will be late to the annual Gilmore Christmas party because she has to work. Emily coldly uninvites her, stating that if Lorelai is going to be late, she might as well not come, and Lorelai is strangely disappointed by this. Dean shows up at Rory’s window after Rory has left for the party, and is caught by Lorelai. After a heart-to-heart, Lorelai and Dean patch things up. Luke, seeing that Lorelai is lonely and upset because she couldn’t attend the party, makes her a ’Santa burger’ to cheer her up. While at the diner, Lorelai receives a vague voicemail from Rory, telling her that Richard is in the hospital. Luke offers to give her a ride. Each of the Gilmore girls reacts to Richard’s medical emergency differently. Emily is confronted with the fact that her husband may one day die, and demands that she be given the decency to die before him. Lorelai, unsure of how she should be reacting, thinks back to her strained relationship with her father and feels like a disappointment as a daughter. Rory is afraid of her grandfather dying before she is given the chance to know him. Emily, in an attempt to distract herself from Richard’s condition, tries to find out the status of the Lorelai/Luke relationship from Luke. After finding out that Richard’s condition was only a bout of angina, the Gilmores settle their differences. Lorelai gives Luke the blue baseball cap that he wears for years to come as a thank-you for his support.

Lorelai is beginning to do with Max what she usually does at about this point in a relationship. She’s looking for an excuse to kill it. She doesn’t even want to go to parents’ night at Chilton, because she’d have to see Max there. But Rory persuades her to go. In the classroom, along with Max, they end up kissing. But Paris, bitter about her parents’ divorce and the fact that she is being run through the Chilton rumor mill, sees them kissing. Paris uses this gossip to turn everyone’s attention to them and away from her. This drives a wedge into Lorelai and Max’s relationship, and Lorelai and Rory’s. And it puts Rory through the rumor mill.

Lane wants to go on a date with Dean’s friend Todd. Rory sets it up, a movie. But they have to hide it from Mrs. Kim, which means they must hide what they’re doing from Lorelai. They tell Mrs. Kim they’re over at Lorelai’s. They hide from Lorelai that Mrs. Kim would not approve of the outing. Unfortunately, Todd turns out to be a really bad date. Until Mrs. Kim, panicking because she doesn’t know where Lane is, finds Lorelai.

Sookie finally schedules a date with Jackson. But Jackson’s cousin Roon is in town, so she suggests a double-date: Her and Jackson, Lorelai and Roon. Lorelai hates the idea but agrees, for Sookie’s sake. But Roon turns out to be a crummy date. And so do Jackson and Sookie. They struggle to get the evening off the ground.

Lorelai has offered to run the charity clothing drive. She eyes a cool rhinestone-studded sweatshirt amongst the crap Luke donated. But when she shows up in Luke’s wearing it, Luke freaks out. It seems the sweatshirt was owned by Rachel, Luke’s former love.

Sookie has gotten ahold of 4 great tickets to see The Bangles in New York City. She and Lorelai want to take Rory and Lane, but Mrs. Kim won’t let Lane go. Meanwhile, Rory is assigned a class project with Paris, Madeline, and Louise. They all decide to meet at Rory’s house to work on the project. Ironically, Madeline and Louise seem to be hitting it off with Rory. So Lorelai suggests the four of them use the 4 tickets to see The Bengals. (Lorelai and Sookie can get cheaper tickets.) So they do. Partway through the concert, though, Madeline and Louise decide to follow some college boys to a party. And when Lorelai finds out…

Lorelai and Rory mock Donna Reed, the dutiful wife. Dean thinks it’s nice how she does things for her family, but he shuts up when he senses how unpopular he’s getting. This becomes a hot area for Rory and Dean, and they end up fighting over it. But when Rory does some research into Donna Reed, she makes some interesting discoveries. Meanwhile, Morey and Babette finally have a new kitten Apricot, the first since Cinnamon died. And Babette asks Rory to sit for Apricot while she and Morey have an evening out. Rory decides to throw Dean a surprise “Donna Reed” night at the Dell’s.

Lorelai persuades Luke to paint the diner, but only by offering to help. Planning the color scheme, Luke mentions that his dad once wrote an order down on a wall, and they end up looking at it, in a particularly sensual scene, kneeling on the floor behind the counter. Meanwhile, Rory brings a chick home for a school project. When Lorelai returns home from Luke’s, she finds the chick has escaped. Immediately, she calls Luke and asks him to help her find the escaped chick. Luke agrees, thinking she actually wants him to come over for an amorous encounter.

Christopher drives into Stars Hollow on a motorcycle, invoking a bout of nastiness from Lorelai. He wants to be more involved in Rory’s life, or so he says. Rory gives him a tour of Stars Hollow and takes him to the book store. He buys her a book… Or rather, he tries to. But his credit card is declined.

Lorelai arranges to help Luke paint the diner after Friday night dinner. Lorelai and Rory bring Christopher to the elder Gilmore’s, where Chris’s parents will also be attending. A huge fight breaks out, and Lorelai and Chris escape to Lorelai’s room on the balcony, where things get hot and heavy and Lorelai loses her sense of self-control. And in the morning, she realizes she’s forgotten about Luke.

Then Chris asks her to marry him.

Episode 116

It’s the Stars Hollow annual Firelight Festival and Rory and Dean’s three-month anniversary. Dean has arranged a romantic evening, and Lorelai gets Rory out of Friday night dinner. Dean takes her out to dinner and then to a junkyard, where he shows her the car he’s building for her. Yes, he’s building her a car. Then he tells her he loves her. And she doesn’t know what to say.

Rachel shows up out of nowhere and wants to get back together with Luke. This further Lorelai depresses Lorelai, who misses Max and seems to be the only person in all of Stars Hollow who doesn’t have any romance in her life. She goes to Friday night dinner, where her mother has set her up with the most sickeningly boring man in the world. She escapes out the window. On her way back home, she talks to Luke about Rachel. Then she gets home and decides to call Max, just in time for Rory to come home, crying, and tell her that she and Dean broke up.

Luke is spending more time fixing Lorelai’s house than he is with Rachel. And Rachel notices. So Lorelai has to have a little talk with him.

Rory finds the Dean box that Lorelai had hid in the closet, the box of things that reminded her of Dean. And she decides to talk to Dean, but she can’t find the words and keeps chickening out. Until she explodes in a fit of emotion during a town meeting, over an issue having to do with the town troubadour. The troubadour’s plight becomes a metaphor for hers. And Dean figures out that something is going on with her. And he responds.

Finally, Max and Lorelai get into a fight when he comes to pick her up for their date and finds Luke at her house. He can only think of one way out. He proposes marriage, to a dumbfounded Lorelai. She says, no, a proposal should be magic. There should be a thousand daisies. So he buys her a thousand daisies…

Sookie wants to play Ella Fitzgerald’s depressing song of love denied, “I Can’t Get Started,” as she walks down the aisle at her wedding. The girls can’t talk her out of it. Meanwhile, Christopher shows up, unexpectedly but to great cheers, to see Rory’s cast removed. He stays for Sookie’s rehearsal dinner and then promises to stay for the wedding. Lorelai learns that he and Sherry are breaking up. Christopher says he wants to stay permanently. He promises to stick with it for the long haul. Because he has changed so much since the old Christopher, the girls are happy with him and excited about it for the first time ever… Until Sherry calls with news that shatters everything and brings the episode’s theme full-circle.

Also, Paris is running for Chilton Student Body President, but she discovers that the students don’t like her enough to vote for her. So she convinces Rory to run as her running-mate by noting that “Harvard loves this kind of crap.” Rory still feels ambiguous about whether she even wants to win, because it would mean she’d be spending the summer in Washington, D.C., away from Dean. Her feelings become even more ambiguous—and destructive—when Jess unexpectedly returns.

Rory’s application to Harvard arrives, and she must fill it out. Sounds simple, but it isn’t. Rory and Paris organize a panel of experts to give advice to the Chilton student body on how to get into the school of their choice. The advice they give goes against everything Rory was going to do. They describe the perfect loser, and guess what: It’s Rory. Suddenly, she feels lost.

(Paris, too, as one of the panelists talks about “weed[ing] out the hyper-intensive candidates” during the interview. This statement not only derailed Paris, it was prescient, as we see in later episodes.)

Meanwhile, Emily manages to freak out Lorelai about how difficult it is to get into an Ivy League school.

So Lorelai arranges a lunchtime visit with a Harvard alumnus, Darren Springsteen. The visit has its own set of revelations.

Lane is looking for a band to play in. She puts an ad in a local paper and talks to a number of losers. Then Dave Rygalski calls looking for a drummer for his band.

Taylor wants to start an old-fashioned ice-cream shop in the space next to Luke’s, a space that Luke owns. And Luke doesn’t want to rent the space to him.

Lorelai and Rory have a new neighbor, Dwight, who ropes Lorelai into watering his lawn while he’s away on a business trip. (He’s moved into Beenie Morrison’s old place and named it “The Oasis.” He has a creepy clock that chimes on each hour a variation of the tune “Midnight at the Oasis” by David Nichtern, hence the title of the episode.) Lorelai in turn ropes Rory into watering the lawn one afternoon. But when Rory tries to turn off the system, the valve gets stuck, and the sprinklers drench her. Desperately, she text-messages Dean to come help her. But when she runs into Jess, she doesn’t want any help from him. She’s still upset that he’s seeing Shane. Still, he gets her to tell him what the problem is, and he runs over to Dwight’s house and fixes it, just before Rory gets a message from Dean. Dean is coming to assist.

Emily invites Lorelai to an antique auction. Michel overhears and begs Lorelai to bring him. At the auction, while Michel is bidding for the Inn, Lorelai goes to the bar and meets a cute, witty guy. But she doesn’t get his name, only his paddle number. She reluctantly, with much prodding from her daughter, asks her mother for his name, Peyton, and phone number. Peyton asks her out to a David Bowie concert the following week. But since that’s so far away, he asks to take her to dinner this week. Unfortunately, Peyton turns out to be self-absorbed and boring. So Lorelai cancels going to the concert. This freaks out Emily, who has been following their activities via her association with Peyton’s mother. She asks Richard to step in, who schedules golf with Peyton’s father to determine whether a “simple apology” will be enough. It seems Lorelai by cancelling has broken a social rule. All this sounds plain crazy to Lorelai, and unacceptably intrusive, until she understands how important it is to her mother to be in the good graces of her social circle.

Jess has a new car, new for him anyway. It’s a piece of junk, but it’ll get him around. Luke suspects he may have gotten it through nefarious means and investigates, even invading Jess’s privacy in order to discover where he got the money to buy it. But there turns out to be a rational, reasonable answer, which Luke never expected. And Luke’s reaction is probably why Jess didn’t just tell him the answer in the first place.

Sherry has a baby shower, and invites Rory. When Lorelai drives Rory to Boston for the shower, Sherry ropes her into attending, too. During the party, Sherry does just about everything she can, unintentionally, to remind Lorelai of how much it hurt her to learn that Chris was having a baby with Sherry. Lorelai almost melts down at the shower, and by the end, she’s ready to do real damage. Now, Lorelai is incensed that Jess has a car, after having totaled Rory’s car. So Rory suggests that they take the deviled eggs that Sherry forced on them as they walked out the door, and deviled-egg Jess’s car, in a classic Gilmore Girls moment.

Meanwhile, the Town Loner wants to stage a peaceful protest. Taylor (being Taylor) denies him permission to protest in the town square. So Reverend Skinner and Rabbi Barans strike back by allowing the protest to go on at the church. In a hilarious scene, the Town Loner completely flubs the protest, and we never find out even what he was protesting about.

Rory and Lorelai get roped into four separate Thanksgiving dinners: At the Kims’, at Sookie’s, at Luke’s, and at the elder Gilmores’.

Kirk gets a cat, whom he names Kirk, leading to a host of Cat-Kirk—Human-Kirk jokes. Cat-Kirk does not get along with Human-Kirk. And during the episode Cat-Kirk riddles his human with progressively more numerous and painful scratches.

Mrs. Kim has hired Dave Rygalski to play hymns on guitar at Thanksgiving dinner. She thinks he’s a christian guitarist, since that’s the way he and Lane planned it. Their idea is to make Mrs. Kim like Dave enough to let Lane date him. Meanwhile, Lorelai takes too much tofurkey (turkey made out of tofu), thinking she can slip it into her napkin when Mrs. Kim isn’t looking. But Mrs. Kim never takes her eyes off of Lorelai, who must eat every last piece of her tofurkey.

Sookie agreed to let Jackson cook the Thanksgiving turkey and then freaks out when it turns out he’s going to deep-fry it. Apparently all the rest of the family are males, and Jackson plays showman with his turkey and big, manly fryer. This leaves Sookie by herself to get drunk. After the turkey, they decide to deep-fry other food (and non-food) items in a frightening display of male stupidity.

At Luke’s, Lorelai confronts Rory with the fact that she doesn’t seem comfortable dating Jess. Indeed Rory doesn’t seem comfortable, because she feels like everyone is watching her kissing Jess, after having seen her exclusively with Dean for so long.

The elder Gilmores have four of their friends over for Thanksgiving, along with Lorelai and Rory. During dinner, conversation turns to college applications. Rory reluctantly reveals that she has applied to more schools than just Harvard. In particular, she’s applied to Yale. After the incident that happened several weeks ago, Lorelai is livid, sure that Richard and Emily put Rory up to it. She melts down right in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner, in front of Richard and Emily’s guests.

Lorelai sets up a double-date: Her and Luke and Rory and Dean. The go out to the Black, White, and Read to see Cool Hand Luke, but the first first reel inexplicably caught fire earlier. They instead end up watching Pippi Longstocking. Luke is very rude to Dean, though, and manages to offend everybody in the process.

Jackson’s town-selectman duties are wearing on him.

Rory gets the idea that Richard is lonely without Emily, because he finished The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Meanwhile, Emily gets a panic room. And while snooping around the pool house, the ladies discover a bright, sequined vest in Richard’s closet.

Lane is upset that Zack has apparently ignored Lane, that she said she likes him as more than a friend and more than a band-mate. So she changes her mind about him, unaware that he is still processing all this news.

Lorelai does her best to get Luke to not give up on them after the awful events at the wedding. Luke tells her he needs some time and Lorelai can’t take it. Rory asks Logan to hang out with her but is upset that when she gets to his place that there are a lot of people there. She gets a call from Sookie who tells her that Lorelai is in bad shape after Luke told her that he didn’t think he could be in this relationship. Rory doesn’t have a car, but Logan lets her borrow his car and driver. Taylor has the whole town taking sides for either Luke or Lorelai. After taking care of her mom Rory goes back to Yale to work things out with Logan, making sure he understood that the hanging out didn’t just mean hanging out, it meant alone time.

When Richard and Emily return from their second honeymoon, Rory attends Friday night dinner without Lorelai, who refuses to speak to her mother or see her, and plans a girls’ night out with Sookie instead. Richard and Emily then give a 100-year-old Greek book to Rory and have yet another maid. Rory surprises everyone with a rare outburst at her grandmother for interfering in Lorelai’s love life. Meanwhile, Luke, who’s miserable without Lorelai, takes his anger out on his customers and his dark mood causes him to burn the food and when one customer wants his omelet redone, he throws him out of the diner. When a meter maid is writing a ticket to put on Luke’s boat (that is parked in front of the diner) Lorelai comes in time to put some quarters in the meter. Emily goes to the diner to talk to Luke. Meanwhile, Lane has a horrific realization about her mother’s influence.

Back at Yale, Rory happily moves into a dingy off-campus apartment with Paris and Doyle, and tries to avoid running into Logan. However, when Logan shows up at her apartment and declares his love for her, Rory breaks down.

Luke is showing signs that he hasn’t slept much. Lorelai wakes up so early that she gets a lot done. Kirk is organizing the Winter Carnival. Lorelai and Rory volunteer to man a carnival booth called “The Amazing Doggy Swami.” At the inn, Lorelai takes care of the New England Maple Syrup Council. Zach is jealous of the time Lane is spending with a 30-year-old Asian man named Joe. At the Yale Daily News, Paris is making everyone except Rory uncomfortable with her demands, expectations and ideas. Later, the reporters gather together and talk about Paris and the fact that they think the paper is going down hill. The reporters don’t ask Rory to be part of their discussion since she’s living with Paris. But Rory sees the reporters in their meeting and they confide in her. Logan tries to mend his relationship with Rory by hiring the coffee cart guy to follow Rory around all day so she has instant access to coffee. Logan drops by the Inn to get help from Lorelai in regards to his relationship with Rory. Last but not least, Lorelai finds out about Luke’s kid, April, and Luke asks Lorelai to postpone their wedding.

With Logan’s help, Rory makes a valiant attempt to get the paper out on time. Meanwhile, Lorelai breaks the news to Richard and Emily that their money will no longer be needed for Rory’s education, and the resentment starts to build. The subsequent Friday night dinner erupts into an emotional confrontation where all four Gilmores finally get their issues out on the table.

When Lorelai finally confesses to Luke that she is worried the wedding will never take place, he reassures her that they will get married soon. The weekend ends in an ugly scene when Logan’s father, Mitchum Huntzberger arrives.

Meanwhile, although Rory and Logan are back together, Logan is miserable knowing that Rory hasn’t really forgiven him, and he takes off with his friends for another stunt with the Life and Death Brigade. Rory accepts Jess’ invitation to attend an open house at his new book store/art gallery/publishing house in Philadelphia. While there, she is surprised to run into Luke, who is accompanying his daughter April on an academic field trip. Back in Stars Hollow, Lorelai is horrified to find that Richard and Emily have been looking at real estate in her town. Also, Jess tries to get Rory back with a kiss and fails when she realizes she’s truly in love with Logan, despite all the bad things he has done to her, and she apologizes to Jess for coming like that.

Meanwhile, at a Friday night dinner, Emily and Richard attempt to set Christopher up with an attractive young woman. Finally, Lorelai decides she was wrong to let Luke postpone their wedding for so long and delivers a tearful ultimatum.

The morning after Logan’s send-off for London, Rory awakes to find a present from him. It’s a model rocket. And she doesn’t understand what it means. And she doesn’t want to admit to Logan that she doesn’t know what it means. Paris suggests that Logan is going to think he’s free to sleep around while they’re separated, Rory doesn’t want to believe that. Rory starts to obsess over the mystery. She spends hours researching on the Internet, until she meets a model-rocket enthusiast in a chat room who tells her where the rocket is from, and she finally understands what it means. She becomes so excited that she calls Logan in the middle of London’s night to thank him for such a romantic momento of their relationship.

The title of the episode (and the rocket) are an allusion to an episode of the The Twilight Zone, called “The Long Morrow.” This Twilight Zone episode is part of season 5 of the classic series.

Meanshile, after spending the night with Christopher, Lorelai wants nothing to do with any man. She returns home to find that the rumors are already flying about the fight she had with Luke. She doesn’t want to talk about it though, not with the town, not even with Rory, and especially not with Luke. She doesn’t even want Luke to know that she slept with Christopher. But then Luke shows up, packed to elope with her, and won’t take no for an answer.

Taylor puts up a red-light camera in Star’s Hollow, to make Star’s Hollow safer. Unfortunately, while demonstrating how it works, Kirk accidentally drives Taylor’s 1964 Ford Thunderbird through Luke’s diner window.

Luke punches Christopher in the face. And he tells Lorelai it made him feel a lot better and that he’s over her now. But he’s still gun-shy about telling TJ that they broke up. And Lorelai still doesn’t feel like talking to Rory about the break up. And she doesn’t tell her that she slept with Christopher. Until Christoper calls and leaves a message on the answering machine.

Rory is upset that she and Logan didn’t get to go on their Asia trip. So Lorelai gets Sookie to teach her how to make sushi. And she puts together an Asia night for mother and daughter at home.

Lane and Zack return from their honeymoon, where Zach got a gastrointestinal parasite. Lane thinks she came down with a parasite, too, but it turns out she has something much more permanent.

Episode 711

Rory returns from her London trip. Lorelai has held up the family’s Christmas celebration until Rory got back. Christopher learns about the girls’ Christmas traditions, and he challenges a few.

Luke asks Lorelai to write a letter of recommendation for his custody battle over April. She spends the whole episode struggling with what to write. However, she hides from Christopher the fact that she is writing this letter. Meanwhile, April unexpectedly shows up at Luke’s diner, without her mother’s knowledge or consent. And Luke tries to convince her to want to move to New Mexico.

Pregnant Lane is huge, and she’s ticked at everyone who asks about her pregnancy or does nice things for her. Mrs. Kim and Zack are chumming it up and running Lane’s pregnancy, and Lane is sneaking candy bars behind her back. So Lane decides she wants to have band practice and invites Brian and Gil to come over.

Episode 712

Sookie and Jackson had a ski weekend planned, but their babysitter canceled. So Lorelai watches Davey and Martha for them. But Sookie is acting very strange. The last time she acted this strangely was when she was pregnant. But she can’t be pregnant, can she? Jackson had a vasectomy.

Luke has his hearing for partial custody of April. The letter Lorelai wrote is very persuasive, as she talks about how Luke was a father figure to Rory. Unfortunately, Christopher discovers the original copy of the letter Lorelai had written on a notepad.

Paris puts together a white board listing all the things she and Rory are going to do before they graduate from Yale. Meanwhile, Rory is more interested in her relationship with Lucy. She writes her a letter of apology and is upset that Lucy has not gotten back to her. She doesn’t know that Lucy has not yet gotten back from her winter vacation.

Lorelai gets a phone call from Rory telling her that Richard is in the hospital. He’s had a heart attack. After their big fight, Lorelai calls Chris about Richard, but he doesn’t come. Meanwhile, Emily is playing administrator and sends everyone on various errands. Luke hears from Babette about Richard. He doesn’t even think about; he comes to the hospital and happily does errands for Emily. But Chris is nowhere to be found. He doesn’t even call Lorelai back. Until she finally calls and tells him that he’s her husband, and he’s supposed to be there for her, and his not being there is not okay. Then he arrives to find Luke there.

Episode 714

Richard is recovering from his open-heart surgery. Christopher and Gigi are staying with his mother. He stopped by the hospital for an hour, and that’s it. And Rory doesn’t understand what his problem is. Then Chris shows up at the inn with a “I guess we should talk.” He feels justified in staying away from her, because he needed space after their fight. Lorelai stands up for herself and how she feels, and he says that’s not fair. And Rory takes Lorelai’s side. In any case, Chris can’t get over his feelings about Luke, and he blames it on Lorelai. So he proposes divorce.

Rory returns to school after the surgery. Paris is still plowing through Operation Finish Line. Rory receives a care package from Logan. And Paris notes that Logan has completely reformed. But when Rory meets the TA standing in for Richard, she develops a crush. And she feels she should talk to Logan about it.

Michel brings Pau Pau to the inn, because Chin Chin passed away, he didn’t want to leave Pau Pau alone in his grief. So Lorelai agrees to organize a funeral for the beloved pet. And Michel plays Emily to Lorelai’s Lorelai.

Episode 715

Lorelai tells Rory that she and Chris have split up. But she doesn’t tell her parents. She just makes an excuse for Christopher at Friday night dinner. Lorelai has also not told anyone else, but Babette gets a clue when she sees a moving van pull up.

Meanwbile, Emily has been limiting Richard to a restricted diet after his heart surgery, including virgin cocktails and a mountain of fish. And Richard is already tired of it. In disgust, he tears into his new personal chef, who then quits. So Lorelai gets Sookie to cook up some good food that he’s allowed to eat.

While Lorelai is helping Emily hold things together, they break for a drink. Lorelai tells her mother that she and Chris have split up. As they drink, Emily begins to admire her daughter for being able to be so independent. But by the time the morning hangover is upon them, Emily has gotten over it.

Liz and TJ stop by the diner with their new baby, to keep Luke company for a few days. As it turns out, they also have a moth infestation in their own place. Luke lets it slip that he went to the hospital when Richard was in the hospital. And Liz and TJ immediately get the impression that he still has feelings for her. And Luke gets that look on his face, too.

Mitchum takes Logan and Rory out for Logan’s 25’th birthday. And he immediately complements Rory on her journalistic savoir faire. It turns out, he wants something. He wants Rory to use her influence to manipulate Logan’s future. That night, Logan finds out that the company he just bought is being sued by someone with an underground patent.

Episode 716

When Rory gets an opportunity to meet with an associate editor from the New York Times, Lorelai takes over planning Lane’s baby shower. But Mrs. Kim isn’t coming to the shower, because she doesn’t approve of the way Lane plans to raise her children. And Lane refuses to force religion on her children as her mother did to her. Lorelai manages to get them to patch things up, but in the process Lane realizes that she may react poorly if her kids decided they want to have religion. And she asks Rory to be the kids’ “Lorelai Gilmore.”

Meanwhile, Logan reveals to Rory that his Internet start-up is in big trouble due to a patent lawsuit. And Logan blames himself for not having researched that possibility ahead of time. So he starts staying out late, drinking, and plans a trip to Vegas with Colin and Finn.

Liz warns Luke about being too set in his ways, and Luke decides to sell his dad’s boat. And he buys a new one.

Episode 717

Mia’s getting married! In North Carolina. Lorelai had planned to drive there with Chris. Now that there is no Christopher, she asks Rory. But Rory wants to stay to finish her schoolwork and to support Logan.

However, Mitchum yells at Logan for not being accountable for the Internet start-up he invested in. And Rory agrees with him. So Logan and Rory have a big fight, and Rory decides to go to Mia’s wedding with Lorelai.

Richard is getting on Emily’s nerves after his open-heart surgery. Emily gets word of the trip to North Carolina. So she invites herself on the trip. And succeeds at being an ultimate pain to Lorelai.

And when Mia learns that Emily is with the younger Gilmores, she insists they invite Emily to the wedding. Emily feels it would be impolite to refuse. So even though she resents Mia for being Lorelai’s second mother, she comes to the wedding.

At the wedding, Logan shows up. He flew down. At first, Rory refuses to talk to him. But when she does, he apologizes to her and tells her that he has resigned from the Huntzberger Group.

Mia also tells Lorelai how Emily came to the Independence Inn five years ago. And impresses on Lorelai how deeply it hurt Emily when Lorelai left at the age of 17.

Meanwhile, Zack and Lane ask Luke to be godfather to their twins. And Zack reveals how nervous he is about becoming a father. He starts trying to rely on Luke for guidance. But Luke sets him at ease and convinces him that he’ll figure it out, just as Luke did. Then Lane’s water breaks.

As Stars Hollow prepares for its annual Spring Fling festival, Rory brings Logan home and shows him around town. Lorelai sees how serious their relationship has become and worries that Logan is too irresponsible for Rory. Taylor angers the town by spending the entire Spring Fling budget on a huge hay bale maze. At an unexpected encounter in the maze, Lorelai and Luke apologize to one another and admit they both made mistakes that lead to the end of their engagement. Meanwhile, Rory has a job interview with the Providence Journal Bulletin and struggles with decisions about her future.

Episode 719

Lorelai stops into Luke’s diner for breakfast for the first time since their break-up, but finds they are awkward and uncomfortable together. Later, Lorelai’s Jeep breaks down and she asks Luke to help her shop for a new car. While they look at cars, Lorelai and Luke’s irritation with one another finally explodes into a fight, which Lorelai secretly takes as a good sign.

Meanwhile, Paris gets accepted to numerous law schools and medical schools, and decides she must break up with Doyle so their relationship won’t influence her choice of a graduate school. Finally, Rory gets a surprising letter that will impact her future plans.

I think I’m finally figuring out what irks me about the latest Gilmore Girls episode, “It’s Just Like Riding a Bike.” Many people thought this episode was the best one in a long time. Unfortunately, I found it infuriatingly boring.

With graduation looming, Rory is anxiety-ridden over her future, so Lorelai tries to cheer her up with a day of eating and shopping. Lorelai notices happily that Luke is once again wearing the baseball cap she gave him, and invites him to join her and Rory for karaoke night at a local bar. After a few drinks, Lorelai takes the stage to sing a heartfelt number which is obviously directed at Luke. Logan returns from a business trip to California and comes to see Lorelai to discuss his future with Rory.

Episode 721

On the eve of Rory’s graduation, Emily and Richard throw her a party and perform a song in her honor. At the party, Lorelai and Christopher are reunited for the first time since their separation, and both are relieved to find they can still be friends.

Logan surprises everyone at the party by proposing to Rory, but she is too shocked to give him an answer and begs Lorelai to help her decide what to do.

On graduation day, Rory and Paris receive their diplomas, and Rory finally gives Logan her answer. Meanwhile, Lorelai is embarrassed about her karaoke serenade to Luke the night before, and Luke is hurt when he overhears her saying it didn’t mean anything.
