This is still one of my favorite episodes, because of the way Amy Sherman-Palladino effortlessly introduces the characters, the way she pulls you along through the episode, the way she sets up the story that will keep the show going for the next three years. I tell people that if they watch through the first Gilmore Girls DVD disc, they’ll keep watching, putting disc after disc into the DVD player.
Then there are the inconsistencies between these early episodes and later Gilmore tradition. They’re always fun to notice and point out. Here are some from the first episode:

While recovering from surgery I watched through the entire seven seasons, then immediately went back and viewed the pilot episode to get a feel for how the series evolved. One of the main things that lept out at me were the major differences in exterior Stars Hollow. Some quick online research revealed that this was because the exteriors for the pilot were filmed on historic Main Street of Unionville, Ontario, Canada, whereas all subsequent episodes were filmed on a Hollywood studio lot.
Here are some examples of the differences I picked up on:
1) One of the first things we see in the first shots of “downtown” Stars Hollow is a beautiful red brick church, a church we never see again in the series, and one distinctly different from the much more New-Englandish white clapboard church on Stars Hollow’s town square in the rest of the series.
2) There does not appear to be any town square in Stars Hollow in the pilot, just a single “main street” (which, of course, is exactly the case in Unionville). Also, familiar businesses are not in the same places in relation to each other.
3) Most distinctive is the difference of Luke’s Diner. While the pilot exterior is evocative of the one in the rest of the series (color scheme and window treatments are the same; “Williams Hardware” sign over the door), the building is very different. For one thing, it is not on a corner; it is a flat storefront along a straight sidewalk. Also, the pilot building is one story, whereas the building in the rest of the series is four stories (although camera angles usually made it look like just two). Across the street are other one-story shops, instead of the granite-faced library/bank building in our more familiar Stars Hollow.
One more minor discontinuity: the pilot made more use of pop songs for scene endings or transitions. The regular series did this occasionally, but more typically made use of the set of original acoustic guitar and female “la-la” pieces written for the show.
Drella was the pushy harpist at the Independence Inn, right? If I’m right about that, while she does disappear after a few episodes, the actress does not. She resurfaced as “Miss Celine,” Emily’s eccentric, name-dropping, turban-donning fashion consultant who shows up with a room full of clothes for Emily and Lorelai before each major ball or wedding. Extra: the actress is also the real-life wife of Jackson Douglas, Sookie’s “Jackson” on the show.
I think Lorelai was kidding when she said the line about her contacts. Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought it was a joke or a reference.

Choose a color that matches your dress closely There are literally millions of different shades of colors, so dyeing shoes to exactly match your dress can be a tricky process. One way to make it easier for your bridesmaids to get shoes that exactly match the color of their dresses is to order them from a company that works with a specified color palette. For instance, dresses, shoes, purses and other accessories (all in a specific color palette) may be available from the same company. If you order a satin strapless dress in Mermaid – a lovely teal blue – from them, then you can be sure that the strappy, high-heeled Kelly shoes that you order can be dyed exactly to match if you ask for them to be dyed Mermaid. Try shoes on in store, order online While you may find a larger variety of dyeable shoes at a bridal store than at most shoe retailers, many bridal stores only keep a few dozen pairs of their most popular shoes in stock in the store. If possible, try shoes on in the exact style you plan to order. If the store does not have that style in stock, try on a shoe made by the same manufacturer in a similar style to get the closest approximation of the fit. Before ordering from the store, however, go online and see if you can find the style through an online retailer or bridal shop. You can often get a better deal that way. Bring a fabric swatch with you to the shoe dyer When you take your shoes to be dyed, be sure to bring a swatch of fabric from your dress so that the dyer has a sample to match. Most bridal shops will supply a swatch specifically for this purpose. Dyeable shoes can add the perfect finishing touch for your wedding day or prom day attire. First and Last...
Just watched the Finale episode and the Pilot for the first time this week, as we missed it on its initial outing. Loved how the final shot looped perfectly back to the first episode shot, of Lorelai and Rory having a yummy meal and chatting at Luke’s, with him right there, messing around at the counter…beautiful continuity.
This series has become a daily ritual on reruns for Hubby and me, meeting at 4 every afternoon for out little sojourn to Stars Hollow. We got turned on to it in Ireland, where we are half the year…there they also run back to back episodes and a repeat set of same about 2 hours afterward, so you can immerse yourself in the plots…and there, they have many fewer commercials.
Have the dvd set now, so I will always have my getaway mechanism to Stars Hollow. For now, we will continue on the First Season, with tea time and such joy. These characters are superb and my Mother and had a similar relationship to Lorelai and Rory.
