Rory’s application to Harvard arrives, and she must fill it out. Sounds simple, but it isn’t. Rory and Paris organize a panel of experts to give advice to the Chilton student body on how to get into the school of their choice. The advice they give goes against everything Rory was going to do. They describe the perfect loser, and guess what: It’s Rory. Suddenly, she feels lost.
(Paris, too, as one of the panelists talks about “weed[ing] out the hyper-intensive candidates” during the interview. This statement not only derailed Paris, it was prescient, as we see in later episodes.)
Meanwhile, Emily manages to freak out Lorelai about how difficult it is to get into an Ivy League school.
So Lorelai arranges a lunchtime visit with a Harvard alumnus, Darren Springsteen. The visit has its own set of revelations.
Lane is looking for a band to play in. She puts an ad in a local paper and talks to a number of losers. Then Dave Rygalski calls looking for a drummer for his band.
Taylor wants to start an old-fashioned ice-cream shop in the space next to Luke’s, a space that Luke owns. And Luke doesn’t want to rent the space to him.
