Hello Kitty is a character created in the 1970’s by the Sanrio Company. Her name is actually Kitty White, named after one of Alice’s cats from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass. Kitty has lots of friends in her fictional world, including a boyfriend Dear Daniel, Charmmy Kitty her pet cat, and Sugar her pet hamster.
Since the 1990’s, Hello Kitty has been a notably popular character in the U.S., including among the Gilmore girls. Almost everything that can be branded has been branded with Hello Kitty, and we’ve seen and heard of only a few on Gilmore Girls, such as the Hello Kitty toaster and Hello Kitty waffle maker. We saw the Hello Kitty Clock-Radio when Lorelai dreamed she was married to Luke, and he set up a zillion alarm clocks to wake her up. Lorelai also once got pictures of Emily sleeping with a Hello Kitty pillow, and she had the elder Lorelai wear a Hello Kitty bracelet for her funeral. Hello Kitty is clearly a staple of Lorelai’s character. Lorelai is a Hello Kitty junkie.
Or maybe it’s just that everything in Star’s Hollow is branded with Hello Kitty…
