RORY: So, what is this, a Henry James novel? The young lady acts up, and her family ships her off to Europe? … How fast did you tell Grandma that I had nothing to do this summer?
LORELAI: I’m not shipping you off.
RORY: Oh, please!
LORELAI: I’m not. I’m just — okay, maybe I am.
RORY: Ha!
LORELAI: I wasn’t planning on it, but maybe in the back of my mind, I just thought—
RORY: Say Goodbye to Daisy Miller.
“Daisy Miller” is a story by Henry James in 1858. It’s about a young girl travelling through Europe. Daisy is very pretty, and too familiar with men. She flaunts social standards and is snubbed as a result. Still, she refuses to bow to society.
In Rory’s case, her mother is upset that she slept with Dean and that she’s ignoring the fact that he’s married. So when Emily announces that she’s going to Europe, Lorelai manipulates the conversation so that Emily asks Rory to come along. And at the first opportunity, Rory accuses her mother of shipping her off to Europe for social training, like Daisy Miller.
