What does a girl do when her destiny is to be the demon slayer? What does she do when she discovers that the universe has endowed her with super-human abilities in order to fulfill this destiny?
The first thing she does is to lose all her friends. The second is to burn down her high-school gym while fighting vampires. Then her parents break up, and her mother moves her to a new town.
This is Buffy Summers’s tale. But Buffy is no average slayer, and with her ingenuity and her cadre of committed friends, she protects the world from a variety of vampires, demons, and other monsters.
Usually, when people mention Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they mean the award-winning dramatic TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy. What Buffy fans don’t like to admit was that it was originally a 1992 movie, a horror-comedy starring Kristy Swanson. This film (kinda) represents the back-story to the series. I think Lorelai and Rory would have really enjoyed mocking the movie. (I know I did.)
Though the movie clearly represents his early work, both Buffy titles were created by storytelling maven Joss Whedon, who also created the cult series Firefly, the movie Serenity, and the Buffy spinoff series Angel. He’s also written a number of comic-books based on these shows, as well as The Astonishing X-Men comic books.
A bit of trivia: Joss Whedon got his start writing for Roseanne, just before Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino did.
