This episode title is a variation on the title Sidney Pollack’s 1969 movie They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? The movie stars Jane Fonda, Susannah York, Michael Sarrazin, Gig Young, and Bruce Dern. In the movie, the protagonists try to survive in the 1920’s and participate in a dance marathon to win some money. This connects to the Stars Hollow Dance Marathon of this episode, in which Rory and Dean break up.
