In the episode “So... Good Talk,” in reference to A Star is Born.
LORELAI: I Netflixed all three ‘A Star is Born’s.
SOOKIE: Janet, Judy and Babs.
LORELAI: The holy trinity. I thought I’d hunker down with some fabulous food and watch all the men that got away…
SOOKIE: Can we watch the Streisand ‘A Star is Born’ first? I really love that scene where she chews on Kris Kristofferson’s lip!
It’s been a couple weeks since Lorelai and Luke broke up, since Lorelai spent the day in bed alone crying, in one of the most painful and emotional episodes of the show. Now she refuses to talk to her mother, whom she blames for breaking them up. After hanging up on Emily several times in a row— It was very satisfying, by the way. Lorelai asks Sookie:
LORELAI: Hey, do you have any of that really great braised lamb risotto thing leftover from last night?
SOOKIE: I think so, why?
LORELAI: Well, since I’m not going to Friday night dinner tonight or ever again, and I’m not in the mood for pizza, I thought I’d have a little fancy food with my movie.
SOOKIE: You’re going to a movie!
LORELAI: I Netflixed all three ‘A Star is Born’s.
SOOKIE: Janet, Judy and Babs.
LORELAI: The holy trinity. I thought I’d hunker down with some fabulous food and watch all the men that got away.
SOOKIE: What? No, you can’t do that!
LORELAI: Why not?
SOOKIE: Because! Look, I’m worried about you…
Lorelai and Sookie try to go out and do something together. But since Sookie is very pregnant, this doesn’t go very well. Because of the baby, Sookie basically can’t party.
LORELAI: We can go inside and order in pizza.
SOOKIE: You need to go out, and see things, and do things!
LORELAI: I have ‘A Star is Born’. All three versions. We can compare and contrast performances and dosages!
SOOKIE: It is my responsibility as your best friend to make sure you go do exciting things even when you don’t want to.
LORELAI: Hanging out with you is exciting!
SOOKIE: It is?
LORELAI: And with pepperoni and some extra cheese – look out.
SOOKIE: I am getting kind of hungry!
LORELAI: Well, sure, all this partying will do that to you.
SOOKIE: Can we watch the Streisand ‘A Star is Born’ first? I really love that scene where she chews on Kris Kristofferson’s lip!
I can only think that Sookie is making fun. Streisand’s character, Esther, had minutes earlier caught her husband John, drunk, in bed with another woman.
She told him, “I hate you.”
He turned and said, “I love you.”
“I hate you!”
He moved closer. “I love you!”
“I hate you!”
He kissed her. “I love you.”
She grabbed his lip with her teeth, not hard, but tenderly. “I hate you,” she said.
Considering that his breath should have been able to power New York City, this is either the most shallow or disgusting scene in the film. (Take your pick.)
But this whole sequence leads to one of the most romantic Gilmore Girls moments. After Sookie and Lorelai have made fun of Barbara Streisand, and Sookie has gone home, Lorelai sits down to watch Judy Garland. During one of the early scenes, she sings “The Man that Got Away,” and Lorelai begins to tear up, and Luke comes knocking on the door…
