JASON: It’s interesting, I didn’t know you and your mother were so close.
LORELAI: We’re not.
JASON: You’re being awfully protective of her.
LORELAI: Well, every family has a Fredo.
JASON: Yeah, and Fredo’s family put two in the back of his head.
Meet Jason Stiles. He’s Richard’s new partner, and he just fouled up Emily’s plans for a launch party for their new business. And Lorelai is taking it very personally.
Fredo was Michael Corleone’s older brother in The Godfather movies. He was peaceable and supportive, always covering for others, always doing things for others, unable to be violent. He was quite out of place in the Corleone family and as a result, not very comfortable with who he was. He tried to be like the rest of the family. But he ended up betraying them instead. So, Michael had him murdered.
Lorelai is the one of her family who doesn’t fit in. Yet she continues to stick up for her family, even while betraying them.
Ironically, Lorelai also once suggested Jess might be like Fredo. (And we know how much she disliked Jess.)
