In the episode “It Should've Been Lorelai,” in reference to The Godfather.
RORY: Where do you wanna sit?
LORELAI: I don’t know. Um, how about this table with its unobstructed westward view of the wide cosmopolitan expansive Klump Street?
RORY: Tempting. Do you know that on a clear day you can see all the way to the garbage cans behind Al’s Pancake World?
LORELAI: Hmm. Or we could sit in the corner, you know, the Mafia table. So that no one can come up behind you and whack you with a cannoli.
RORY: Whack you with a cannoli? Oh, because he left the gun and took the cannoli!
Lorelai and Rory are trying to decide where they should sit in Luke’s. The place is empty. Where to sit? Lorelai has a number of ideas, including this one:
LORELAI: Hm. Or we could sit in the corner, you know, the Mafia table, so that no one can come up behind you and whack you with a cannoli.
RORY: Whack you with a cannoli? Oh, because he left the gun and took the cannoli.
This is a reference to a scene in The Godfather: Part I. Paulie sold out Vito Corleone, the Godfather. So Clemenza and Rocco have Paulie drive them to a place, where Clemenza says, “Pull over, will ya? I gotta take a leak.”
Paulie pulls over; Clemenza gets out to relieve himself; and Rocco puts three in the back of Paulie’s head.
Clemenza returns to the car and says to Rocco, “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”
