Is This the End of the Gilmore-ism As We Know It?

I almost feel cheated.

Just as I’m getting in gear to add new Gilmore-isms to the database, especially from new episodes, they start disappearing! This week especially made me panic.

I was watching the latest episode, “To Whom It May Concern,” and informally noting the Gilmore-isms. Now, when I do this, I miss a bunch of them. But still, there are usually so many that hit you like an anvil, I notice many of them, even if I’m not actually looking for them.

I also knew that last week’s episode, “Santa’s Secret Stuff,” was really light on Gilmore-isms. There had only been 8 quotes in that episode that referred to pop culture. Back in the day, every episode had at least a dozen. And some episodes had 40 or more. Even the earlier episodes of season 7 have at least a dozen Gilmore-isms. But since the Christmas break, there’s been a dearth of Gilmore-isms. And now I’m wondering whether it’s turning into a drought.

Back to my story. I was watching the latest episode and informally counting the Gilmore-isms. And I was two-thirds of the way through the episode, and I hadn’t counted any Gilmore-isms so far. And I was starting to get scared. By the end of the episode, I had only counted 2 Gilmore-isms. Yes, two.

Fortunately, it wasn’t that bad. I went back and scoured the episode for Gilmore-isms. And I came up with 8, just like last week. But this week, each quote referred only to just one pop-culture reference. Last week, a few of the quotes referred to more than one reference, including Zack’s monster “meeting” Gilmore-ism, in which he mentions 7 different bands and artists.

So last week, we had 8 quotes mentioning 16 pop-culture references. And this week, we had 8 quotes references on 8 pop-culture references.

Now, we haven’t yet gone through every single extant episode of Gilmore Girls. But my gut tells me that this is an all-time low.

What’s happening to the Gilmore-ism? Have the writers of Gilmore Girls lost the art of the Gilmore-ism? What happened over the Christmas break? Has David Rosenthal made a conscious decision no longer to advance the Gilmore-ism?

These witty quotes are one of the things Gilmore Girls is known for, one of the things that makes our beloved show special. Is Gilmore Girls becoming just like every other show on TV in this respect?

Is this the end of the Gilmore-ism as we know it?
