Lorelai is beginning to do with Max what she usually does at about this point in a relationship. She’s looking for an excuse to kill it. She doesn’t even want to go to parents’ night at Chilton, because she’d have to see Max there. But Rory persuades her to go. In the classroom, along with Max, they end up kissing. But Paris, bitter about her parents’ divorce and the fact that she is being run through the Chilton rumor mill, sees them kissing. Paris uses this gossip to turn everyone’s attention to them and away from her. This drives a wedge into Lorelai and Max’s relationship, and Lorelai and Rory’s. And it puts Rory through the rumor mill.
