It’s the Stars Hollow annual Firelight Festival and Rory and Dean’s three-month anniversary. Dean has arranged a romantic evening, and Lorelai gets Rory out of Friday night dinner. Dean takes her out to dinner and then to a junkyard, where he shows her the car he’s building for her. Yes, he’s building her a car. Then he tells her he loves her. And she doesn’t know what to say.
Rachel shows up out of nowhere and wants to get back together with Luke. This further Lorelai depresses Lorelai, who misses Max and seems to be the only person in all of Stars Hollow who doesn’t have any romance in her life. She goes to Friday night dinner, where her mother has set her up with the most sickeningly boring man in the world. She escapes out the window. On her way back home, she talks to Luke about Rachel. Then she gets home and decides to call Max, just in time for Rory to come home, crying, and tell her that she and Dean broke up.
