Ernest Hemingway was a novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. He was an American expatriate in Paris. He was part of “the Lost Generation,” a name he popularized, and led a turbulent social life. He married four times and had other romantic relationships during his lifetime. In 1961, at the age of 61, he shot himself with a shotgun.

Hemingway wrote with few words, but effectively. This style shaped twentieth-century fiction. In his stories, the heroes typically show grace under pressure. Many of his works are American literary classics. Hemingway received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea. And he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
