In the episode “Will You Be My Lorelai Gilmore?.”

APRIL: We had to write a five-page fictional story featuring someone we know as the hero, and I chose Kirk. It’s hilarious.

This Gilmore Girls quote is meaningful to me personally because of a real-life writing project I was involved in. Years ago, there was a great writer’s prompt group called The Alchera Project. The group moderator, she had to dissolve the group due to personal obligations. But back in the day, I was a member of this group. And I was the one who put her on Gilmore Girls, because of all the great things I said about the storytelling.

Anyway, the way The Alchera Project worked was this: Each month there were a number of writing prompts you could chose from. There was a poetry option, a prose option, an essay option, one called “a picture is worth a thousand words,” a word grab-bag option, and so forth. Each month, you had to pick at least one option and write something for it.

One month in early 2005, the prose option was to write a story using a character from one of your favorite TV shows, preferably a minor character. And the moderator had given an example: Writing a story about Kirk from Gilmore Girls. We had a good laugh about that one.
