Introduce Yourself!

Wed, 2007-03-21 16:51
By TimK

I’ll start the ball rolling by telling you a little something about myself.

I’m a guy, about a year younger than Lorelai (and 2 years younger than Lauren). I was born in June 1969 on the day before the summer solstice, a month before the first moon landing. I’m married with 2 daughters. My wedding was on September 11, which was our anniversary years before it was anything else, and will still be our anniversary even after no one remembers that anything else ever happened on that day of the year.

I got into Gilmore Girls around season 3, when I discovered that Edward Herrmann starred in it. I had to at least check it out, because I’m a long-time fan of Edward Herrmann’s work. The thing is, I don’t remember the first episode I ever saw. The first episode I remember watching is “It Should’ve Been Lorelai,” from season 2. I know that because I remember the scene in which Michel, under Rory’s direction, passes a CD to Lane, while Kirk distracts Mrs. Kim. This may have been during the season 2-3 summer break.

I also don’t remember when I got hooked on Gilmore Girls. I watched a bunch of episodes. And at that time, WB was running the earlier episodes on a different night as Gilmore Girls: Beginnings. And I thought it was a cool show and worth watching a couple of times a night. At some point, I got to watch the first season on video tape. And I thought, a really cool show, but I didn’t think I’d want to shell out for the DVD’s. And then came the dearth. There actually wasn’t a dearth of episodes, but I felt like there was. Because I wanted more and more. I couldn’t help myself. I was desperate.

And then Gilmore Girls started rerunning from the beginning on ABC Family. And I was Hooked (with a capital H). I was desperate to see these episodes over and over again. And as soon as I could afford it, I bought the DVD’s, because I needed to watch them. It’s a strange experience I’ve only had with Gilmore Girls. I mean, yeah, there are other shows I’ve felt like I’ve wanted to watch, and I’ve watched them over and over again. But with GG, it turns into an obsession, an addiction. I actually have to force myself to put the DVD’s back up on the shelf sometimes, so that I can live my life.

Fortunately, my wife also likes Gilmore Girls (although she’s not a nut like me). And so does my older daughter.

Introduce Yourself

Thu, 2007-03-22 15:56

Well, if I am doing my math right (which sometimes I wish I weren’t) I am a little over 1 year younger than Lauren (my bday is in Sept. & Lauren just had hers) and 1 year older than you Tim. I am married and while my husband & I have no kids together we do have 6 kids between us (we do however have 2 dogs & 2 cats that are like our children. And I say this becasue there is no day that goes by that there is not a flurry of activity from all the animals, you would think that there are children running rampant throughout our house). None of them live with us, so I am the lone Gilmore Girl in the house.

I have been hooked on Gilmore Girls since the first commercial from the WB for the new line up. The show looked like nothing else that was going to be on. And it was….I fell in love with the relationship that Lorelai & Rory had (making me wish I had had that when I was growing up). Then I fell in love with Luke (which is a whole other story). I admit that I’ve even had the girl-crush on Lorelai. What wit! What one-liners! I need Amy to write for my everyday life. Then I could be wittier & sassier like Lorelai. I admit that I have poached a few lines that I do use in my everyday life. I can’t help it! They are just too good! A big THANK YOU to Amy….My favorite one I used just yeseterday at work. We joked about being special and my comeback was “Special? Like stop eating the paste special?” I got a good laugh from my co-workers on that. I have about 3-4 others that I can’t wait to dazzle them with…. Yes I am a freak.

I have all the seasons on DVD and I do watch them on a semi-regular basis. I do Gilmore Girls marathons on the weekends…though I was al ittle disappointed that the Season 6 dvd didn’t have a booklet of gilmore-isms and not really any extras like the other season’s dvds. I have a coaster at work that have all the “Everything I need to know I learned from the Gilmores”, a Luke’s diner tshirt, a “Dirty” tshirt (one of my faves), the “Life’s short. Talk fast” tshirt, and I saw a GG bumpersticker that I loved, but it was not offered as a tshirt, so I had it made: I’m lovin’ you like a $2 whore (My husband actually gets a kick out of this shirt when I wear it). I have a bunch of photos of Scott Patterson around my desk (I had him up b4 I put up a picture of me & my husband). My myspace layout has Luke & Lorelai videos on my page & a little over 4 pages of Luke & Loreali videos set to music. My favorite is the one on my page that is called “Everything” by Lifehouse. It’s a beautiful song & the clips are great. I cannot take credit for it (or any of the others for that matter), but I absolutely LOVE it.

My friend Heather & her daughter Hannah are Gilmore Girls fans too. Soon we will have a marathon, just us girls. I’ll have to kick my husband out of the house. Somehow I doubt if he will have a problem with this as long as I am sending him to Manland (Sears, Harbor Freight, Lowes etc…). Then we can bask in all that is Gilmore!!! yeah!!!

Welcome, Raine!

Thu, 2007-03-22 20:45

Hee hee. For a second there, you sounded like Carol Brady. Smiling

Glad to know you, Raine.

Me

Thu, 2007-03-22 22:32

Hi everyone, my name is Katy (actually my name is Katherina, but everyone calls me Katy), I am 20 years old (a little bit younger than you…) and I live in Chile. (Right, in South America…)

Well, we speak Spanish in here but I love English. I fell in love with it the day that I got Cable TV. And imagine my expression when suddenly a woman entered the classroom talking in “that language that they use on tv!” (this was when I was in 7th grade, because I studied at a German School, so I started studying German when I was about 7 years old, and English when I was in 7th grade..) and as I used to watch Tv all day, it was kind of easy for me to learn English. I used to watch movies all day long, (I hated almost every subject on those days - besides English, of course - so, I did not study in the afternoons). And well, as I love it so much I am studying English at the University right now. Yes, I am going to be an English teacher in a near future (in 2 years).
My dream is to go to England to learn the accent and the culture. I am planning to go next year, as a Language Assistant… we will see how that works, at the moment I am saving money for that =P.

Well, how did I start watching GG?
Do you remember that I used to watch TV all day? Well, one day I was surfing the channels and I started watching “something” on the WB (I did not know the name of the show on those days) and I liked it very much from the first time. The next day I watched it again, and again, and that is how it all started.
I just loved it, their way of living, speaking!, their mother-daughter relationship, everything!
2 years ago, (when I was a freshman) I had the VCR programmed at 11 o’clock every single day, (that was when GG was on, on those days). I was at the University at that time; I was not able to see it, so I watched it whenever I could. That’s how I came to see all the seasons and all the episodes. And on Thursday nights I watched the new episodes (and when I wasn’t at home, I recorded it, in order to see it when I had time)..

Now, I do not see it as much as I could because I do not have time, though I always see the new episodes on Thursday nights.
Today is Thursday, so I am waiting to see another new episode, (I do not know the name because I hate spoilers)…

And how did I find this website? Just surfing the net… and I love it!
So congratulations TimK Eye-wink
(Unfortunately, I do not have too much time to read everything you have in here, but I do read your e-mails! Always!)

Well, I think that’s it…
Greetings to everyone!

And I am sorry if I made any mistake Sticking out tongue

Hi, Katy. And welcome! That’s a great story. So… You know three languages? That’s so cool. And I know what it’s like to be busy. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi

Tue, 2007-05-01 06:05

I just found that there was a message board on this site. Personal info: I’m female, 32, single, no pets.

Now, on to more interesting things. I have a habit of being dragged kicking and screaming to things I ultimately end up liking. It was the same here. I refused to watch Gilmore Girls for about half of the first season. Just knew I wouldn’t like it. I was under the impression that the Gilmore Girls were a pair of bimbo twins. Don’t ask where that impression came from. Plus, back then, it conflicted with Friends. But, I flipped to it when Friends was a repeat one day, and found I enjoyed it. Then, I would watch the second half of the show after Friends. I’m not sure if I gave up Friends first or if Gilmore Girls moved to Tuesdays first, but it wasn’t long before I began watching each episode from the start.

Hi

Tue, 2007-05-01 17:47

Hi, Dani. Nice to have you hear. I love your posts that I’ve read at other boards.

Yeah, from what I understand GG had a lot of trouble getting off the ground. Wikipedia IIRC said it didn’t take off until the 5th season. (!!?) Of course, this is when some classic fans say things started to go downhill. Ironic.

But whenever I’ve sat down with someone and actually started watching episodes from the beginning, they’ve gotten hooked like I did.

Introduce Yourself

Thu, 2007-05-03 11:50

Hi I’m Julie and just discovered the wonder of GG last Fall. I had heard about GG but never had watched the show primarily b/c I did not have cable. That fact alone would warrant several comments from Lorelei and Rory Smiling I never gave the show much notice either as the DVD sets hit the shelf. Last fall, I was at my neighbor’s home and decided to borrow some of her DVDs. I grabbed Season One as an after thought. Well, the rest is history. I watched the 1st episode and found myself just entranced with the entire GG concept. I joined Netflix and have steadily made my way thru the entire set. I am done now and am watching season 7 as it airs. With no more episodes to watch, I feel as if I have lost my friends …. why this show has been shunned by the Emmy’s is beyond me. Of course I hope for Season 8 and a decent ending to this marvelous show. It will live on in syndication for decades.

A new fan!

Thu, 2007-05-03 13:52

Welcome, Julie! I love hearing from new fans, because I’ve had the same experience, as have many others. Just recently, I loaned my parents my season 1 DVD’s. They started going through them a season a week. That averages out to, like, 3 hours a day. And these are people with jobs and lives. Smiling

Anyhow, I’m glad you’re enjoying GG.

Cheers,
-TimK

older to this site, new to introducing myself!!!

Fri, 2007-05-04 11:56

I signed up for this site a few months ago, but i just found this part this morning while i was crying over my keyboard. My name is Jackie, I love Dolphins and my favorite color is purple (incase you were wondering where my screen name come from), and if age is based on Lorelei/Lauren, then i am 10 years younger than Lorelei and 11 years younger than Lauren. I started watching Gilmore girls from the second season, although i have seen every episode multiple times (between the DVD’s and Family Channel reruns). I have always told my mom she should check the show out because it reminds me of her and I so often, but she just caught the “Gilmore Girls Addiction” (as my Fiance refers to it), about a year ago. She, like I, records every episode on the DVR box while at work, and we watch an episode a day. This show is unlike any i have ever seen!!! The writing is amazing, the way the actors deliver the lines is astounding, and the town of Stars Hollow makes me want to live there!!!
I have found myself so attached to these characters, that i feel bad for them, i get mad at them, it’s like they are a part of my family. I am certain that this sounds insane to some, since before i started watching Gilmore Girls, I could never have imagined being this attached to a TV show!!! How much more lively would life be with a few more Lorlei’s in the world!!! And who wouldn’t love to live in a town like Stars Hollow???
I like just about very charater for different reasons, but Lorelei is my favorite!!! She ais amazing as a mom, a friend and a woman, she shows a great example for girls, on what you can accomplish, and how strong you can be, even without a man!!!
I have liked a lot of shows that have gone off the air, and while the finale episodes are usually emotional, I have never been this upset by the announcment of a show ending. I am actually crying at my desk!!! I never thought i could be so attached to character, and a town from a television show. It’s almost like I’m loosing a really close friend. For lack of a better way to say it, this sucks!!! (I hope I can say that here!!!) Anyway, all good things must come to an end (although in this case it’s a GREAT thing ending!!!), and life must go on. I will continue watching all the past episodes, and in my heart and mind, Stars Hollow and the Gilmmore Girls will go on with there lives!!!
I hope this wasn’t too sappy, I am normally not so corny, but my emotional state has been seriously effected today!!!

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

Fri, 2007-05-04 22:40

I have found myself so attached to these characters, that i feel bad for them, i get mad at them, it’s like they are a part of my family.

Hi, purpleflippers. Exactly! It’s like they’re real people, and we sympathize with them. And when the story’s over, it’s like a part of us still left back there inside the story.

I think that’s a sign of a great story, at least one that resonates with us. My favorite novel, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein, is like that. Some people say Heinlein’s characters are shallow. But every time I read it, I feel like I’m living inside Heinlein’s fictional world. And when I finish the book, I feel like I’ve lost something that’s still back there in the pages.

Not many stories do this to me, but I love it when it happens.

Hail and Well Met

Mon, 2007-05-14 07:04

Hello
I find it funny that I am joining here 2 days before the finale… but I have been online a bit more lately and stumbled here through gilmoregirls.org. This is a nice site, Tim. You liken it to Stars Hollow. Well, who wouldn’t want to be in Stars Hollow?
It is wonderful to share the obsession… I also feel very attached to these characters, and I have never felt so murgled about a TV show ending before.
I have been a fan for a few years now, after being home sick and catching reruns from season one. I was in awe of so many things; primarily smart characters that enjoy reading, and were better, brighter, funnier people because of it.

As to me~ I am female, four years younger than Lorelai, engaged, and my fiance and I have many pets, and rotating foster pets.

This Tuesday is going to be rough.

Hail back!

Mon, 2007-05-14 14:04

Hi, Rhiannon. I haven’t talked about it much yet, but I do plan to keep this site going, even after the finale. Because the obsession doesn’t end just because the story is complete.

Anyhow, it’s nice meeting you. I rmember being engaged. Being married for 15 years is fun, too. I have a high-strung, black cat. Used to have another cat, too, a cinnamon tiger. I miss him.

-TimK

Oy, me too, me too!

Mon, 2007-05-14 09:18

…that is, was sure I wouldn’t like it, am now a certified addict (if you interrupt me during an episode, your hair had better be on fire), and yes, get mad at the characters when they are jerks. Long live GG.

I hate being interrrupted.

Mon, 2007-05-14 14:20

Yeah, I hate being interrrupted. Unfortunately, inbetween 8 and 9 is when the kids get ready for bed, which means lots of distracting activity in the house. That’s why I always record the episodes. So I can go back and watch them again.

-TimK

Gee, Carson, Thanks.

Fri, 2007-05-25 14:34

Hello - I am joining now, after the series finale *sniff - sniff*.

My name is Minda, I am from Minnesota. Minda from Minnesota. Ha. I am 23. I am a retail manager at a major department store. I am obsessed with the outdoors, especially backpacking/canoeing/camping. Things that Lorelai and Rory would never think about doing. A friend introduced me to Gilmore Girls only back in season 5 when she said I reminded her of Rory and I had to watch this so called show. I guess I can kind of see some qualities of Rory-ness in me. I am a bookworm (reading for pleasure not so much studying), I am always using witty comments and not to mention the love for coffee. I never did ask her though what exactly it was that reminded me of Rory. I think I will do that today.

And the first episode I ever saw was “Written in the Stars”. What a great episode to start on, huh?
“See? He called me “Hot Plates.” He so likes me.” Said by Lorelai. That is still one of my favorite lines because it has stuck in my head since the beginning. That whole scene in the diner is one of my favorites.

Ever since that first episode I was hooked. With in a week I bought Season 1 on DVD because I knew I had some major catching up to do. And once I got through 1 I went to Season 2. I spent a few months catching up constantly watching seasons 1- 5x02. And I knew I was addicted.

I love making icons for GG and I still have yet to make a vid. But some day I would love too, I just haven’t found the perfect song yet so if anyone has any suggestions that haven’t been used that would be fabulous. I think that is all that I can tell you now, I have to go back to work. I love this website it has a lot of useful info on it, I just wish I would have discovered it a little bit sooner.

Hi, Minda. Glad to meet you.

Sun, 2007-06-03 01:22

Hi, Minda. Glad to meet you. There are lots of people who only discover GG late in season 7, and others who will continue to find it in the years to come. I believe it’s a true classic and that time will bear that out.

-TimK

Hey, Steph.

Tue, 2007-12-11 06:54

Hi. I know this reply is really late. I’m getting caught up on a lot of stuff. But welcome anyway! Smiling

-TimK

Minda, I don't know what you mean by "looking for a song"...

Thu, 2007-06-28 11:05

…I admit that I never liked the fact that “Where You Lead” is the theme song. I mute the TV for it, it so annoys me. Why this, of all songs? I can come up with two better ones right off the bat: “Lean on Me” and “I Wanna Thank You (for Bein’ a Friend)”. Be interesting to hear what others think.

GG Theme song

Fri, 2010-07-16 22:18

I think the theme song fits perfectly. Thank you for Bein a Friend was the theme for Golden Girls wasn’t it?

Hi!

Mon, 2007-08-06 19:26

Hi everyone, my name is Iris. I’m 16 and I’ve been hooked on GG since the second season.

Hey, Iris.

Tue, 2007-12-11 06:56

Sorry (as with Steph) that I’m so late with this. GG is a classic.

-TimK

hello.....

Tue, 2007-12-11 04:15

my name is dan. i’ve been obsessed w/ gilmore girls since i saw an episode in season three (eight’o’clock at the oasis) in january. i watched it simply because the remote was out of reach AND i was tired. =) i loved it! =D
besides being obsessed w/ gilmore girls, i’m a HUGE fan of reading and writing. thats pretty much it, haha. hello everyone!

Hi, Dan.

Tue, 2007-12-11 07:06

Hey, Dan. Nice to meet you. That’s some story. Smiling So now I imagine you’re getting caught up with all the episodes. Watching the reruns on ABC-Family? Some of those early episodes are excellent. And you’ll probably discover that watching the season-1 and season-2 episodes helps the season-3 episodes make more sense.

Cheers!
-TimK

Hi everyone

Tue, 2008-01-15 23:33

Hi Tim! Hi people.
Well Tim, you send me an e-mail talking about how the forum Four Fat Chicks is your Stars Hollow (you were right, I got it.) and how you would like to have something like that about Gilmore Girls, so here I am to try to do it with you. My name is Thalita, I’m 21 and I’m from Brazil. I discovered GG a little time ago, in the end of last year I broke my right foot and as I was home all the day I watched TV all the time. This was when I first really watched Gilmore Girls and I loved the show, I had first watched one episode of the Brazilian version and it wasn’t good because of the dubbing. So I got all the DVDs and started watching from the first season. I am currently watching season 6, and I’m really sorry that there are just seven seasons, I’m almost finishing it, and I will miss it so much. All these characters are now like friends for me, real friends. I can say that I had moments when I wasn’t feeling good about something in my life and just watching GG makes me get better, it’s almost the same as having a good talk with a friend; you laugh, you get anxious, you get emotional, you get mad… You may think I’m crazy, but sometimes I’m watching it and really get into the story, I actually shout to them, like “no, don’t do this”, or “come on, say you are sorry” and crazy things like that. After all I would like to have a place to talk about GG, to remember the great episodes and laugh again. Gilmore Girls made a difference in my life, I’m glad to have broken my foot so I could find out about this great show. I hope to make some good Gilmore Girls’ friends here! It’s all for today and I’m sorry for my English… it’s not that good yet.

Thalita Carvalho
“Life is short. Talk fast.”

Gilmore freak just to begin with...

Mon, 2010-05-24 02:54

Hi there! I’m André (or if you prefer, as most people do, Andy) from Brazil, 22 good years old and believe it or not, not even one whole of those years watching GG! However, I could tell you all those great things the guys above said about the show and mention all the unique features that make it so especial for me (for us), but that would just make me sound repetitive.

Actually, I’ve known the show for some years (since maybe 2003), but had never watched it or even felt any interest to do so. I knew it had ended in 2007 and that it was really loved by so many people. As a matter of fact, I have a colleague at work who’s a big fan, anyway, none of that had ever made me feel like getting to watch it. One sunny day, around February this year, I got Season 1 DVD in hands at a local store and decided I’d like to buy it and take a look at something new (at least new for me!), since my fav show so far, Friends, had ended back in 2004.

That’s my story with GG. Simple, you would say. But, as foresaid, even though I’ve been watching it for only 4 months I must say I’ve found something more than especial in my life. It is NOT simply a TV show. Every character, every line, every gilmore-ism, EVERYTHING about it makes me more and more obssesed. You might find me a freak, but I really don’t care. When I watch it, I’m there, in Stars Hollow. When the episodes end, I get sad about getting back to “reality”. And that’s what I think’s so incredible about it. Gilmore Girls is my lifestyle. I cry with Lor & Rory, I’m happy when they’re happy, I get angry with them… well, I said I’d not like to sound repetitive, but that’s just true.

I’m still way back behind you guys, just finished Season 2 (can’t wait to watch Season 3!), but I know already, my life’s not the same and will never be.

By the way...

Mon, 2010-05-24 02:53

By the way, great to see another brazilian here Thalita!!! \o/

Hi

Fri, 2010-07-16 22:14

Just found this site today. My son actually got me started watching Gilmore Girls when it was still airing on prime time. Now I own all the DVDs and watch them repeatedly. I also watch re-runs on TV when I am home. My first impression of the witty, rapid-fire, repartee that is characteristic of the Gilmore Girls was the feeling that I was being shot at by someone brandishing an automattic weapon. Now I am addicted. I watch the DVDs over and over. I work through all the seasons of Star Trek Next Generation, then the Girlmore Girls, then all the episodes of Beast Wars. Now as I watch I try to Google all of the various references when they come up. I am actually learning things.
