Would Amy Drown Her Own Baby?

In her introduction, Raine wrote, “I need Amy to write for my everyday life.”

This reminded me of a comment I read somewhere, someone claiming that Amy Sherman-Palladino purposely sabotaged season 6, because she rejected for season 7.

I’m going to state a very strong opinion now. Eye-wink Firstly, I can’t imagine any artist sabotaging his own work, no matter what was going to happen to it. The Palladinos invested blood and sweat in GG. In interviews, they said they almost burned themselves out on the show, and I believe it because I’m an artistic type myself.

But I can also see several directions the show could have gone in season 7. When you’re telling a story, from the storyteller’s perspective— You have to build up the conflict, put your hero in a seemingly impossible situation. You tie him up with the evil genius’s dissecting laser aimed right at him, with an army of guards all around, while the secret weapon that will start World War III is scheduled to go off in 30 seconds. Then you get him out of it. So it makes sense that fans couldn’t see how Lorelai was going to get out of the spot she was in. That doesn’t mean that the story had been sabotaged.

And as a storyteller, I get hot under the collar when people belittle Amy for her work on Gilmore Girls, especially the latter seasons. I’m all, like, “Well, yeah. I mean, what did she actually do for the show, anyhow? Not much! All she did was she created the vision, imbued the show with it, and turned GG into a world-wide phenomenon! Yeah. That’s not enough to reverse all the damage she’s done to GG through the years.”

OK. I think I’m done venting for now. Smiling

I agree, Season 7 is Season

I agree, Season 7 is Season 7’s fault. They could’ve written it that Lorelai just slept over at Chris’ house because she needed a friend. She & Luke could’ve made up the next day, but they didn’t write it that way, they kept going & going & had them get married. Personally, I don’t think Amy ever wouldve had that happen. I miss Amy.

Good point

Yeah, that’s a good point. Though that might have felt like a cop-out. Why all the suspense if nothing actually happened? Still, that probably could have been made to work.

Or maybe something almost happened, but it was derailed at the last moment.

Or even if Lorelai actually slept with Christopher, Luke could have responded differently. When Lorelai told him, he could have, oh, maybe asked what was going on. Was she seeing Chris? If not, why would she do that to him? “I thought you loved me. I thought you wanted to marry me. If you want to marry someone, you don’t go out and sleep with someone else.” And instead of plunging into denial, Luke could have struggled and then decided to forgive Lorelai. That doesn’t repair the relationship, but it’s a first step. But Lorelai’s marrying Christopher changed all that.

I’ve been watching old episodes of Roseanne, especially the ones that Amy had a hand in writing. BTW, did you know that Dan Palladino was a producer of Roseanne while she was credited there as “Amy Serman”? Is there a story behind that? The other day, I caught a Godfather reference, and I thought, I bet I know who snuck that in there. Laughing out loud

So I’m really looking forward to Jezebel James. I hope Fox treats it right. If they do, it’ll probably be a hit.

Would Amy Drown Her Baby - Hopefully Not!

Well, I created a username to read and respond to the L/L can make it entry but I stumbled across this and find I must comment. Season 7 is what it is, I’ve personally enjoyed it but that is beside the point. The storyline had to take this detour with or without Amy. Christopher always was, and always would be, an obstacle if a Lorelai/Christopher relationship was never fully explored. That said, yes I think it’s possible that Amy could have tried to stick it to the guy filling her shoes. I don’t mean she would sabotage the show, but that she might not leave him with the best possible scenario. For example, she could have chosen not to show Lorelai appearing to be naked in Christopher’s bed the next morning leaving it open for the new producer to continue as desired. But she made that choice for the final scene. It didn’t leave any new producer coming in with many options. Christopher was brought back in at the end, and from my understanding, David Sutcliffe was signed to 13 episodes while still under ASP’s reign so there was a plan there either way. And while she might have planned to use him in the same way she also might not have thrown in that final scene if she was still going to be involved.

Good Point About Christopher

This is a good point. I’ve often wondered how far the current story deviates from the story Amy originally envisioned. Unfortunately, we don’t know the full story of what happened behind the scenes, and we probably never will. The final scene of season 6 was pretty key to the cliffhanger, so it makes sense that it was there. For all the fan complaints, I still think it makes a good story.

I think there are probably more options than we’d like to admit. We assume that because we can’t think of any options, there are none. But few of us have gone through the writing exercise. Few of us have actually plotted out the possible storylines. If we as writers did so, drawing on all our skills as writers, we would prbably find a sizeable list of possible plots, each with interesting possibilities.
