Episode 718

As Stars Hollow prepares for its annual Spring Fling festival, Rory brings Logan home and shows him around town. Lorelai sees how serious their relationship has become and worries that Logan is too irresponsible for Rory. Taylor angers the town by spending the entire Spring Fling budget on a huge hay bale maze. At an unexpected encounter in the maze, Lorelai and Luke apologize to one another and admit they both made mistakes that lead to the end of their engagement. Meanwhile, Rory has a job interview with the Providence Journal Bulletin and struggles with decisions about her future.

Some people have mentioned that the hay bale maze in Episode 718 is a metaphor for Lorelai’s life. That Lorelai is lost, as it were, in the maze, and Luke has to find her and show her the way. But I don’t think Lorelai is really the one lost i

Someone was searching for this yesterday and landed at this Gilmore Girls fan site. The song Grant-Lee Phillips was playing at the end of “Hay Bale Maze.”

I really didn’t like this episode. Could they have shoved the maze metaphor down our throats anymore? Which way will Rory and Logan go, in separate directions or down the same path? Luke shows Lorelai the way out of the maze — out the maze of her lonely life?? And Lorelai really didn’t feel Lorelai-y this episode. She felt very Emily-y. So judgemental and negative. Also the way they set up that scene between Lorelai and Logan in the kitchen, I thought they were going to end up making out.

But man, Matt CZzzzzzz has one hot bod!!

I am seriously scared of Lorelai’s wardrobe in the next episodes, based on the previews. What is with the puffy sleeves?!?!

I didn't get the metaphor.

Hi, J. I actually didn’t get the metaphor. Still don’t. That’s probably because I didn’t see the episode as about Lorelai in a maze. Rather, it was about Rory and Logan. If the episode were about Lorelai in a maze, I would expect Lorelai to talk to Sookie about Luke, for example. Instead, she talked to Sookie about Logan. So Lorelai in the hay bale maze might be a metaphor for where she is or where she feels she is right now in her life. But if it is, how would I know it?

I just thought the hale bale maze was Taylor going insane. He’s finally cracked. And he missed the meaning of Stars Hollow, like Christopher did when he bought out the Knit-a-thon. The meaning behind these events is that everyone pitches in. I guess Taylor really lucked out that everyone was so overwhelmed by the maze. Although I don’t get that either. All pretty silly, really.

The more interesting story I thought was Logan’s. And I want to blog about that, hopefully before next Tuesday. Smiling

Update: Here the blog entry: “Who’s Really Caught in the Hay Bale Maze?”.
