Some people have mentioned that the hay bale maze in Episode 718 is a metaphor for Lorelai’s life. That Lorelai is lost, as it were, in the maze, and Luke has to find her and show her the way. But I don’t think Lorelai is really the one lost in the maze.
Rather, Logan is. And what’s more, Lorelai should understand what he’s up against, because Lorelai was there once herself. And the thing that Logan most needs now is something that Lorelai was lucky enough to find when she was where he is now.

Here’a my video commentary on episode 718, “Hay Bale Maze.” Watch it, and comment below. What do you think? Am I Taylor Doose on hay? Or am I onto something? What’s your point of view? I love hearing about how other people interpret Gilmore Girls.
You can ignore the following paragraphs if you watch the video…
Some fans felt the writers were trying to shove hay down their throats, metaphorically speaking. But I didn’t think the episode was about Lorelai and Luke, because not even Lorelai talked about how her and Luke. Rather, she talked about Logan. Indeed, if anyone is trapped in the maze, it’s Logan.
Logan is paralyzed by fear. He screwed up once, and now he is hesitating to try again. Instead, he keeps an idea book. But ideas are a dime a dozen. Just try keeping your own idea journal, as I do, and you’ll see how many of them you’ll come up with. But ideas by themselves are worthless. Only when you use one of your ideas and take action on it, then the idea can be worth something. But Logan doesn’t know how to take action.
Now, Lorelai, when she struck out on her own, she left her parents. She had the infant Rory. And she walked up to the Independence Inn, no experience, no skills, but willing to learn and willing to work. And Lorelai met Mia. And Mia took Lorelai under her wing and taught her all about working an inn. Lorelai eventually ran that inn better than Mia ever could. And those are Mia’s words, not mine. Then Lorelai went on to open her own inn. Lorelai could not have done any of these things were it not for Mia.
Logan needs a Mia. He’s willing to work, but he doesn’t know how. He needs a mentor, someone to take him under his wing and teach him all about starting a technology company. Lorelai should understand this, even though she doesn’t. Because Lorelai has been there.
What do you think? Have I lost it, like Taylor? Have I put my entire budget into the hay bale maze? Have I moved my gazebo with a crane? (He was lucky that gazebo didn’t fall apart. I don’t think it’s ever moved. And to just pick it up with a crane like that?! Insane!) Or am I onto something with this Logan angle?
