I didn’t announce it on this blog, because I’m not ready to hold my breath yet. In the wake of Gilmore Girls being cancelled, Amy Sherman-Palladino (who originally created the show) said that she hopes to do a 2-hour TV movie with her version of the GG ending… “in a year or two.”

The thing is, a lot can happen in a year or two. Many fans were ecstatic about this movie. I’ll jump up from my seat in excitement as soon as they announce the production schedule… in a year or two.

Which leads me to the latest news. You may know Kristin, of the column “Watch with Kristin,” on E! Online. For example, she was the one who orchestrated the “Save One Show” campaign, which Gilmore Girls won, with Veronica Mars. But I’m not going to talk about that, because I don’t want to stir up bad blood.

Yesterday, Kristin posted Lauren Graham’s response to the TV-movie question. And she pretty much echoed my thoughts on the matter:

Francesca: Any chance of a Gilmore Girls reunion? I want to know how Amy Sherman-Palladino would have ended it! What was the final line?

I got to ask that very question of Lauren Graham herself, who tells me: “People keep asking me about it, and I haven’t spoken to anyone who could actually make it happen. I do wish [Amy] had gotten to be a part of the end because the show was so much Amy’s vision from the beginning, but there were a number of reasons that wasn’t the way it was. But would those four final words have made a difference? I’m not sure. I think we were at a good place to end, and I think it was a natural ending.”

Lauren also sent out a message to you fans (including you who are still flooding my inbox with “Save Gilmore Girls” messages): “I have been very moved by the response from people in just their kindness about the show and sadness about it ending. I really have appreciated that.” Sniffle.

That part about Amy Sherman-Palladino’s vision— Yeah. Amy had a vision for Gilmore Girls. I’ve said that before, many times. Her vision showed through in every episode. She was turning that vision into reality. And when she left, her vision left with her. And that’s why the show fell apart in season 7. That’s why the CW should have talked it out with her. Because Amy was the core reason Gilmore Girls worked.

I love Lauren Graham. If you’ve read what else I’ve read, you know I do. I think she’s one of the most beautiful and talented actresses ever to appear on TV. And without her skill and talent, Lorelai Gilmore would not have become a real person.

One of the things you very quickly learn in the field of direct-response marketing is that the talent always believes he is the reason why a product works. And he’s always wrong. Let’s say we were making an instructional DVD about How to Play Guitar. And we got some famous guitarist to show us his chops. And then we sold these DVDs and made millions of dollars. Okay. We couldn’t have made the DVD without a great guitarist. But there are hundreds, if not thousands, of great guitarists out there. And any of them could have done the video. And we could have sold it either way. But the reason we made millions of dollars is because we could sell it. In other words, the money is in the writing and in the marketing, not in the talent.

I truly believe that if Lauren Graham had not been available at the beginning to do GG, someone else would have. And Gilmore Girls would have gone forward. And it still would have become the same worldwide sensation, just with a slightly different feel. Because Amy’s vision is what made Gilmore Girls a global phenomenon.

And so the CW should have begged Amy to stay, because she was the only way Gilmore Girls could be the story it was meant to be.
