When Lorelai asks Luke for yet another cup of coffee (this time for Rory), he begins his usual tirade about how unhealthy her coffee drinking habits are. At this point, Lorelai points out that the cup is for Rory, and, when Luke expresses disbelief, says, “Look, Officer Krupke. She’s right at that table, right there.”
Officer Krupke is an overbearing, judgmental police officer character in Leonard Bernstein’s award winning gang-themed Musical West Side Story, based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Officer Krupke is constantly breathing down the necks of the main characters, convinced that they are hostile, law-breaking hooligans. Lorelai is comparing Luke to Krupke.
