What do you do when your family needs you? What do you do when you don’t want to become part of the family business? What do you do when your family conflicts promise to drag you down to ruin?

This famous movie trilogy chronicles the mafia career of Michael Corleone. It is based on a book of the same name written by Mario Puzo. Michael does not want to take over as head of the family. He doesn’t even want to be part of the family business. He’s happy to leave it to his brother Sonny. But when another family ambushes and murders Sonny, Michael has no choice. So begins his long struggle to bring stability between his family and the others, so that he can retire. In the process, his life is changed, irreparably.

The Godfather is one of the most celebrated movie trilogies of all time. As I write this, The Godfather: Part I is voted the number-one all-time best movie by IMDb users. Part II is number 3.

Lorelai and Rory also love these movies, and indications are they own the trilogy on video tape. It’s also the single most referenced work in Gilmore Girls, with at least a dozen references.
