The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccessful United-States-planned and funded invasion by armed Cuban exiles in southwest Cuba. An attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro, this action actually had the opposite effect. It caused Cuban-American relations to deteriorate rapidly, worsened by the Cuban Missile Crisis the following year.
