The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in 1952. It is set in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, in the midst of the infamous Salem witch trials. Miller also wrote the screenplay for the 1996 film, directed by Nicholas Hytner.
The story begins as the local preacher’s daughter becomes unconscious while participating in a ritual dance. The town sends for an authority on witchcraft to investigate. Justice proceeds as the girls perjure themselves to accuse others of witchcraft.
