How Gilmore Girls Taught Me that Writers Are Undervalued

Just a quick link to a post on my writing blog, about my take on the Writers Guild of America strike, and how valuable writers are to a TV show.

Even though the biggest part of this post is about Gilmore Girls, I almost didn’t link to it here. Because I make some pretty disparaging comments regarding fans in general, and Gilmore Girls fans in particular, of which I am one.

Please remember that I am a writer, and that Amy Sherman-Palladino (in spirit) taught me everything I know. (Almost everything, anyhow.) I am fiercely dedicated to her work, and sometimes react like a creative personality when even GG fans disparage her… which some GG fans have done.

On the one hand, the first season of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s new show The Return of Jezebel James has been cut back from 13 episodes to only 7. On the other, she’s writing and directing a film adaptation of Amy Cohen’s The Late Bloomer’s Revolution for HBO Films. Click here for more.

The summer is about half over. This means we begin to look to September and the next season of TV. Here’s a pretty long list of where you can find actors and actresses from Gilmore Girls during the 2007-2008 TV season. Click to continue »

Lauren Graham Speaks About Gilmore Girls Movie

I didn’t announce it on this blog, because I’m not ready to hold my breath yet. In the wake of Gilmore Girls being cancelled, Amy Sherman-Palladino (who originally created the show) said that she hopes to do a 2-hour TV movie with her version of the GG ending… “in a year or two.”

The thing is, a lot can happen in a year or two. Many fans were ecstatic about this movie. I’ll jump up from my seat in excitement as soon as they announce the production schedule… in a year or two.

Which leads me to the latest news. You may know Kristin, of the column “Watch with Kristin,” on E! Online. For example, she was the one who orchestrated the “Save One Show” campaign, which Gilmore Girls won, with Veronica Mars. But I’m not going to talk about that, because I don’t want to stir up bad blood.

Yesterday, Kristin posted Lauren Graham’s response to the TV-movie question. And she pretty much echoed my thoughts on the matter: Click to continue »

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s new TV show The Return of Jezebel James won’t be premiering on Fox until next spring. Even so, I’ve decided to launch the first Jezebel James news and fan site, JezebelJames.info.

In the months leading up to the premier, I’ll keep tuned into Jezebel James news, and I’ll also be looking at other work by Parker Posey, Lauren Ambrose, Scott Cohen, Michael Arden, and the rest of the cast… Including a little Gilmore Girls.

What Made Gilmore Girls the Best Show on TV

What made Gilmore Girls special, in one word: Vision. Amy Sherman-Palladino has a vision for the stories she weaves, and it shows. Then she pours her passion into making this vision a reality. Then her passion pours over into the fans she creates for her stories. She did it with Gilmore Girls, turning it into a world-wide sensation. I expect she’ll do the same thing for The Return of Jezebel James, if given the chance.

It’s fascinating. What follows is based on a commentary about Gilmore Girls I wrote a year ago. I wrote it just after the news broke that Amy and her husband Dan were not returning for the seventh season of Gilmore Girls. And even I was surprised at how little I needed to change it. The legacy Amy Sherman-Palladino created lives on. Click to continue »

Jezebel James Video Clips and Interview with Amy Sherman-Palladino

By TimK

Here are some clips from the pilot of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s project, The Return of Jezebel James (still a working title, BTW), starring Parker Posey and Lauren Ambrose. I found pieces of what I love of classic Gilmore Girls in this new show. I also know that between the clips, there’s a deep, involving storyline. It’s classic Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Fox has picked up the show for 13 episodes, to start next Spring. (Ugh.) The big question is whether it can pick up enough of an audience quickly enough for Fox not to cancel it before it even gets off the ground. It can’t pull a Gilmore Girls and discover most of its fans after the first few seasons. It has to do well within the first few episodes. Fox is famous for cancelling great shows before they got off the ground. But I guess at least I have plenty of time to pray before then…

But back to the news, EW.com also has an interview with Amy Sherman-Palladino about Jezebel James.

Farewell, My GG: Long Live the Gilmore Spirit!

Celine Dion? Oh, please. Don’t make me do that. Yeah, I know, “My Heart Will Go On” was Chin Chin’s favorite song. But how about “Tears in Heaven.” That’s a wicked song. Or “I Will Always Love You.” I mean, it’s got the cheese factor, but it’s still at least a legitimate—

In the beginning, the story goes, there was Amy Sherman-Palladino. And she was in a room with a bunch of TV executives. And she had 4 idea pitches planned out. And she pitched her ideas, and the executives’ eyes glazed over and they kept glancing at their watches and it was almost lunchtime. And Amy became desperate, because she knew none of her ideas had captured the interest of the TV executives. Click to continue »

Another Amy Sherman-Palladino Project

Wed, 2007-05-02 03:13
By TimK

Quietly revealed at the MTV upfronts in April, Amy Sherman-Palladino is working on Worst Day of My Life, a show inspired by fans who have written to her about their low points.

This is apparently the project she had been referring to in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last April, when she commented, “We’re talking to MTV about doing a show with [producer] RJ Cutler — not a reality show, something else, a great idea. We’re meeting with MTV this week to see about that, in fact.”

In fact, this show is one in a list of shows that are part of MTV’s new web strategy. And it sounds like a project Logan Huntzberger would sign onto. Click to continue »
